Why do you play roller derby?
My mom wanted to be a roller girl when she was growing up in the 70's. She wanted to run away and join the Bay City Bombers, and go by the name of "Charlie Angel", but she got pregnant with me, and gave up that dream. I'm doing it for her. I'm doing it for the look in her eye when she's on the sidelines watching me play, wearing my shirt, and screaming, "MAKE THEM BLEED, TRIGGER!"
What are your favorite two things about playing roller derby?
1.) I'm such a nice person in "the real world". I always want everyone to like me. I love that in "the derby world", I can be a super villain, and still have fans! It's better than sex. Well, almost.
2.) I've never really gotten along with girls. I still don't get along with most of 'em, but, DAMN, do I love my derby girls!
How did you get your derby name, Trigger Mortis?
When I was trying to come up with a name, I had trouble going to sleep at night, I would be in bed, mentally thumbing through ideas for names. I think Trigger Mortis came to me in twilight sleep, just before deep sleep, and I jumped out of bed, said it out loud, and knew that was it for me.
What roller derby skates and gear do you use? What skates make you drool?
I'm still on my starter skates...I can't bear to part with them. My severely beaten Pursuit 2000s with Flatouts on them, for maximum stick. Triple eight wristguards, Protec knee and elbow pads. I've gone through a couple helmets. I can't remember which one I've got now.
What would you tell someone that doesn't know roller derby to get them to come to a bout?
"Sit on the front line and wave at me. I'll make sure to knock a bitch into your lap!"
What else, besides play, do you do for your league?
I'm the Marketing Co-Chair, and I'm in Media/PR and Creative/Bout Production. I don't sleep much.
What was your worst injury from roller derby so far?
My superpower is Fast Healing. If I've ever been hurt, it must have only lasted a few minutes.
How hard is it for you to balance your derby and real life responsibilities?
I do alright, but it's pretty hard to concentrate when you're always thinking of that adrenaline rush of derby.
Where do you see the sport of roller derby in 5 years?
On the lips of every smirking, fiery-eyed woman in the world, and in the hearts of every one of her fans.
Who is your favorite 80's hunk?
Nicholas Cage, but only as the "punkrocker" in ValleyGirl. He was totally bitchin'!
