Roller Derby Girl Tips - 21 Ways to be Tough, Yet Feminine

My friend from ACRD, Trigger Mortis, and her ACRD girls (many who are Derby Luv Rollergirl interviewees) have written a piece on "21 Ways to stay tough, yet feminine". It's on the Dallas/ Fort Worth CBS 11 local news site, along with another one of those "roller-derby-is-making-a-comeback, reporter puts on skates" interviews as a related video on the side - I don't know when it was done, but if it's recent, I have a comment.

I love roller derby leagues getting press, but I look forward to the day that I see a story on mainstream TV (MAV TV's airing of WFTDA games notwithstanding) that is post-"making a comeback" for roller derby and maybe says - Roller derby aloready came back, if you missed it, it's here, now here's your local league, check'em out!

But anyway, I digress, maybe it was an old video, and I haven't been actually searching for news videos around the globe and I may be missing the whole f'in point. So to carry on, how can we be tough and yet, feminine? My own personal tough, yet feminine advice?
I don't know. Wear lipstick when you're being aggressive and stern with your employees? Fight in your fishnets? Don't forget the deodorant after practice?

Oh, Oh, I know! ... slap your lover while wearing your derby skirt commando!
Or is that just slutty? hahaha

Well ACRD girls give ya 21 ways.

My favorite is:

17. Never give up. "Real women fight to the finish. Don't let frustration stand in your way. Roadblocks are only temporary, and if you fall 50 times, get back up 51 times. Nothing feels as good to achieve if it wasn't worked hard for." ~Fresh Meat Nicole

Another league splits.... can't we all just get along?

In my usual early week review of all things roller derby, I heard about the Central New York Roller Derby league that has split. Now we have the CNYRD and the Utica Roller Girls.

So let's look at the Pros and Cons of starting a new league, or splitting your league:

Pros:
-You can correct mistakes and use your past experiences to build a better organization
-You can direct your new league to be more go or more show (concentrate on development of athletics, or development of crowd-pleasing as you see fit)
-You can have control over where your dues are going and can use a communication style that fits you better.
-You can make your own rules and not go by the original league rules.
-If starting a new league, you get the automatic gratitude of your future new recruits when they fall in love with roller derby.
- You'll have more networking opportunities. Let's face it, be honest, we all want to be popular.
-You may have a higher position than you had before, so you may have more access to training and information than a basic skater.

Cons:
-If you are splitting: You dilute the talent pool if there is a league in your city already. Depending on your numbers of new recruits each year, you'll now have competition for those new skaters that could be super stars.
-You will have to compete for media coverage, promotion, sponsors and fans. With the economy being in a recession, people do not have as much money to spend on a family of 4 at $15 ticket prices with snacks and merch as often.
-You may have a lot of drama and gossip and fighting amongst the former league members, and the ones that come with you. Now, if you're into that kind of drama, more power to you. This also depends on the amicability of the split and the size of your city.
-You undermine roller derby to the fans and the original league to other roller derby leagues, which can hurt fan sales, fundarising, and future bout contractual agreeements.

-If it's a new league in a new city, it will be a LOT of work. Be prepared for it! And be aware that you will not make everyone happy all the time.
-If you're a new league: Getting sponsorship is hard.
- You will have to devote twice as much time to roller derby, because now you're a skater, as well as part of the business that has to run the business.
- You will need partners and other board members to help you. And you will have to trust each other.
- Leaders have to lead. So you will need to work harder, try harder, practice more, and inspire others with your greatness, or at least your commitment to greatness.

I am sure there are other issues, I couldn't list them all. And every city is different. But if you're thinking of splitting, or of creating your own league in a own with or without roller derby, it's important to do what's best for roller derby in your town. Roller Derby is bigger than a single skater.

Everyone can't be happy all the time, but if some people can be happy most of the time, and most people can be happy some of the time, and a few people are unhappy only some of the time, then that's probably as good as it's going to get.

Ok, I am talking about this because I miss roller derby and if starting a new league would fix my time issues and allow me to go back to full-time training and practice tomorrow, part of me would say, YEAH! do it! But the logical, derby luvver part of me says, no. There's already a lot of roller derby and some awesome leagues in my part of Ontario (ToRD, GTA, Hammer City, Tri-City, London (Forest City)) and it would be bad for roller derby. So I'll be patient for '09.

In the meantime, I have the GMDD skills clinic with Bonnie D Stroir and Bully Julie of San Diego in two weeks, and I am trying to arrange a practice with the Blue Ridge Rollergirls in NC for my annual US Thanksgiving trip home, and I am also waiting for a final trip approval for a business trip that will allow me to catch a practice with the Rocky Mountain Roller Girls in Denver in early December.

Keep your elbows down and skate hard!
Later,
Nia

PS - 47th day of no smoking - I'm making it! Over halfway through my 90 day challenge. And I am a non-smoker!

Ok, what's up with THAT?

A local weekly mag The Montreal Mirror, is a huge promoter of shows and events in Montreal. I love the MIrror, I read it every week, and it's a great place to see upcoming concerts and to hear about artsy shows and city goings-ons. They promoted my team last year and I thought they were awesome for being into roller derby!

This week, a reporter named Chris Barry did a PEOPLE profile of Ashley Thudd, the co-captain of La Racaille, a team for MTLRD.

The questions were all cool, and then he asked Ashley Thudd how hard it was to secure a spot on the in the league. She told him it was pretty easy for her, (she is an awesome skater), but that it does have some basic requirements. His next question made me gasp in shock.

I apologize if you are offended by reading this, but you won't understand the level of my outrage without the question.

He said: "Is one of them [meaning the requirements] superior cunnilingus skills?"

I wrote him this calm and un-offensive response.
Hi Chris!
Thanks for including Ashley Thudd in the Mirror this week, she is an awesome roller derby player. It's great to see someone paying attention to the rollergirls of Montreal!

Personally though, why were you asking if a requirement to play is "superior cunnilingus skills"? What does personal sexuality have to do with playing roller derby?

Your interview was of a woman who happens to be an accomplished business woman, dancer, and athlete. Ashley Thudd is plenty awesome and interesting all by herself, and I don't know what sexuality she is.

With that question you just trivialized all the blood, sweat and tears rollergirls are putting into their leagues across the country. Roller derby leagues are skater owned, skater operated, and the talents of the rollergirls are what keeps the organizations running. It has nothing to do with their personal sexuality

There are some great skaters and great atheletes playing roller derby, and rollergirls come in all shapes, sizes, religions, colors, careers and flavors. The one thing they have in common is that they are all awesome, mentally and physically stong women that enjoy playing roller derby.

I hope you re-think this question in the future.

Thank you,

But inside, I have to say I am completely outraged at the level of crudeness and disrespectfulness displayed. The Mirror may be a free mag and it's focused on the music, arts, alternative, and club scenes; there is plenty of LBGT subject matter, but this was just crossing some invisible line with me. Am I being prudish? Homophobic? I don't think so.

Let them think I'm gay, it'll keep lame guys from hitting on me, but let's leave the smut out of it, okay? Maybe it's the southern belle in me, or I'm vibing some Aretha Franklin, but all I am asking for is a little respect.

From the RollerCon Front

A few of my league-mates are down in wonderful Las Vegas for RollerCon 2007. Here's a quick update for those rollergirls out there that are missing out:

Jess Bandit, Trash N Smash, and Georgia W Tush (co-blogger), all of MLTRD are enjoying RollerCon in three ways:

1) Education!
Jess told me that they had some great intro and high-end seminars on gear. Skate and Gear advice and Maintenance. I can't wait to get this education in my head!

2) Weddings!
Trash N Smash and Jess Bandit will tie the knot at midnight tomorrow night, Las Vegas time, to become derby-wives. Along with scores of other Rollergirls that have decided to "tie the knot" with the Rollergirl friend that's always there for them, no matter what. Congratulations Trash and Jess!

3) Competition!
So far, the girls have seen some pick-up scrimmages, and I hear Georgia's been skating and training for the Team World team game she told us about for tonight. Good luck to all the Team World Rollergirls, and Kick ass, Georgia!

For some detailed recap of day 1 of RollerCon, and for some exciting news about WFTDA 2007 Tournaments being TELEVISED, that's right, on MAV TV, check out Have Derby Will Travel. I know Hurt Reynolds is hosting some seminar/courses at RollerCon, and I asked Trash to say hi for me, I hope she gets a chance, and Hurt knows I'm with him in spirit.

All it did was make me wish I was there, in my favorite vacation destination, soaking up my favorite obsessions.... ok derbyluvvers, watch out for some cool stuff next year, I'll need to get this site bigger so I can fund my travel to RollerCon 2008. No worries, the laptop and digitial camera will be in hand, and if you send me there, I'll post every day!

On your way home from RollerCon, swing through and check out Heartland Havoc The 2007 WFTDA East Regional Tournament August 17-19, 2007 at the Battelle Hall in the Greater Columbus Convention Center, Columbus, OH. It's hosted by the Ohio Roller Girls, LLC.

MTLRD Champions - Les Filles du Roi

Last night's 2007 Season Championship of the MTLRD was the best game of the entire MTLRD history! The Contrabanditas played better than ever before, harder than ever before, and kept almost all Les Filles du Roi (FDR) from standing out as superstars...

FDR started well wih a 3-0 first jam, The Contrabanditas rallied back a few times during the game and were ahead twice. At the end of the first period, the score was 37-33 for FDR. early in the game, Contrabanditas' jammer, Cat Attack, had left the game after being pushed from behind and face planting into the concrete floor, hitting her mouth and busting her lip. We hope she is okay, but I'm waiting to hear about her. The score at the end of the second period was somewhere around 68-49 (to be confirmed) for FDR. The Contranbanditas rallied back a few times during the game and were ahead twice.

By the third period, penalties had started wracking up for both teams, but FDR didn't falter. My 'ditas weren't able to wrack up enough points enough to come back. L'il Homewrecker suffered a ligament injury in the third. The Contrabanditas played hard to the end, but we were beaten 98-71 making FDR the MTLRD 2007 Champions. Congrats to the FDR!

Speaking of Cat Attack's injury, I have to say, intentional, opposing blocker, two-handed shoving from behind into someone's back should be more than a minor penalty. Look in the NHL, look at the case of Bertuzzi, checking from behind can really hurt someone if it goes wrong. It's reckless and dangerous. The player that hit Cat was probably 3 times her size and weight. Had that gone wrong with Cat's face on the floor and someone that size falling atop her... well come on, I know it's roller derby, injuries are a when, not an if, blah blah, but it was just damn dangerous. Ok, soapbox is being put away now. Thanks for listening.. ;)

Rollergirl Q & A - Pyro Maim Ya - ACRD

Well folks, it's back to business after my trip to Hamilton, Ontario this weeknd for the Roll In Rage double header featuring the MTLRD Contrabanditas and Les Filles du Roi v the Hamilton Harlots and the Steel Town Tank Girls where we lost with a good clean fight, and lost a player from the 'ditas due to a broken and fractured ankle. (poor Scarlette Impailya, aka Fox, we hope she is recovering well after surgery).

The latest and last of that special 5-girl series from the ACRD is up. Pyro Maim Ya with her fiery red hair is our newest rollergirl to befriend. So check her out!

Oh, and while I was away, Hurt Reynolds of Have Derby Will Travel found the Aleve commercial featuring the Rat City Rollergirls on Youtube, and I've posted it on the latest video on the right sidebar... it's cool!

Wrap up for this week - NY, TORD, Rat City, and Derby luv to all

PoughkeepsieJournal.com - Roller derby league to debut June 17: "Roller derby league to debut June 17

The Hudson Valley Horrors will battle Western Mass Destruction in the area's first women's flat track roller derby competition June 17 at 6 p.m. at Hyde Park Roller Magic on Route 9."

Mistresses of mayhem - the Toronto Sun gives some much deserved press to the Toronto Roller Derby League, also called TORD that kicked off this month. A couple of my leaguemates were at their game. Looks like anyone that would have travelled to see us in Montreal will not be headed out as their next two games are June 16 and June 30, like ours, so check them out at the George Bell Arena if you are in the TO area!

That's the wrap up from the news on google today, I'll be on a long drive or two this weekend thinking up better ways to entertain and educate you... so come back! Oh, and did you hear about the Aleve commercial with the Rat City Rollergirls? If anyone has a way to record and post that, please come on over because I am in Canada and haven't seen it yet - little time for TV lately too...

Carolina Rollergirls

Roller derby team gaining popularity - State & National: "The Carolina Rollergirls are part of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association and are ranked sixth in the nation in roller derby, with their final regular season bout Saturday at Dorton Arena in Raleigh. "

I had to post this. I want the Carolina Rollergirls to know that I am still a Carolina girl at heart, born and raised in the NC foothills. I have cheered for them all along, and 6th place, wow! I am so proud. I know I play for Montreal, but I can only hope to someday be good enough to play with my home state girls. They are awesome!

Go, Blue, go!

Derby Luv on the road

So I am taking off tomorrow around midday to travel from Montreal, Quebec 8 hours over the 401 TransCanada Highway to Hamilton, Ontario. Also known as the Steel Town, and related by my Canadian friends that are US knowledgeable as the Pittsburgh of Canada.

The Double header ROLL IN RAGE game of MTLRD and Hammer City Roller Girls is sure to well worth the purchase price, with two games to watch. I already posted about it, but if you're around, we'll be at the Market Street Arena in Dundas ON located at 35 Market St. S. Doors open at 3 PM, game at 4 PM.

Personally thrilled that my husband has decided to come with, we'll be picking up a rental car and hitting the road together. I'll miss out on the antics of my derby girls in the vans convoying together, but it'll be a roller derby mini-vacation for me. Either way, a good time.

What does this have to do with Derby Luv? Well, I hope to meet some new and interesting rollergirls from Hamilton, get lots of pictures and video to chronicle my first away game, and of course, unless the hotel I am at has internet service, I'll be offline until Monday.

The 3rd of 5 ACRD Rollergirl Q & As, Athena Monster, is going live tonight, and then on Monday, we'll reconvene with the final two. I hope you are enjoying these sassy and entertaining Dallas derby queens.

I'm on the hunt for new story ideas, new rollergirls who want to show off and talk about themselves and roller derby, roller derby music, products, and anything else to make this site more interesting. Send any ideas to info at derbyluv.com.

Apocolypse Pow Q&A Interview is up and other stuff

So Apocolypse Pow is the second in the line of 5 of the ACRD (Assassination City Roller Derby) girls that all volunteered to be Derby Luv Rollergirls. Another derby queen on the books, and things are shaping up around here!

In other news, I have spent a few hours mapping my way from Montreal to Hamilton Ontario for the Roll In Rage bout with me and the MTLRD against the Hammer City Roller Girls on Saturday, June 9th. Les Contrabanditas (my team) go up against the Steel Town Tank Girls and the Les Filles du Roi fight it out with the Hamilton Harlots. By all reports Hamilton is tough to beat and a great derby league, so we'll see what comes of it. For more info, visit mtlrollerderby.com.

Tickets are on sale at the MTLRD website for our Championship Bout in Montreal on June 16th.

Thanks to everyone that's been interested in Derby Luv lately, and for all the suggestions, comments and luv sent derby luv's way. Remember, if you want to read about it, I'll write about it!

I'm back and better than ever!

Ok, *shew!*, what a week or two it's been!

You will notice the new layouts and colors on the site. the pages within are slowing being migrated to the new design. I hate to sound like a 1996 webpage, but "please pardon the mess while we are under construction"

In big news, there are new rollergirls for you to get to know. Sour Cherry was interviewed weeks ago, but did you see her yet? Man, she will put fear into the heart of any rollergirl, and make men cry... love it!

And the first of five of the ACRD (Assassination City Roller Derby) players, Trigger Mortis, is live. FINALLY! I hope they all forgive my tardiness. Here's another girl after my derby luv. Next time I travel to Dallas, I think I may be able to go skate with Trigger and friends... I am SO psyched! And she doesn't know yet, but I've hung out at the DoubleWide in Dallas before. I have photos to prove it - very funny place. Check her out!

In Nia Capps news, I am all booked in my hotel for my first ever away game with MTL Roller Derby. A big double header match in Hamilton Ontario on Saturday will put me and my "'ditas" up against the Steel Town Tank Girls, and our league sisters and rivals, Les Filles du Roi against the Hamilton Harlots. Doors open at 3 PM I think - I am confirming where I'll be and I'll let you know!

OH, and a week later, we're playing our championship bout of this mini-first season for MTL Roller Derby, us ditas against the Les Filles, once again. Tickets will be on sale tomorrow from the website.

June 30th, you can see me at the MTL Roller Derby all-stars game as a Cheerleader. That's right - you may remember me from when I was 12 in the burgundy and white uniform from Oakland Elementary's Baseball Cheerleading squad if you were in Asheville, NC in about 1986-87 or so. I was the curvy one that you threw pennies at one Saturday. I threw those back hard, eh? But I kept your quarters mwa ha ha ha

Should be fun.. I'll be crushed when my little drunk squad mates all fall off the pyramid I'll be at the bottom of, but at least I'll have beer hahaha

Ok... later!

GCRG vs Big Easy Rollergirls March 24

Tulsa World:
"The Green Country Roller Girls are rolling out to New Orleans this weekend for one of its first official league bouts, said Lora Gambino, aka Malicious Mabel, spokeswoman for the roller derby organization. "After two interleague losses, the Green Country Roller Girls are more determined than ever to capture their first victory," Gambino said. "

Tulsa World did a write up on the GCRG's upcoming bout with the Big Easy Rollergirls, and I found out about Hurt Reynolds of Have Derby Will Travel . Seems Hurt has changed his life to follow American Roller derby, travels, and blogs it. A new hero for me. I think I'll try to contact him to interview him. Wish me luck!

Shannon Simpson Debut with ACRD

Star Community Newspapers: Sunday at Texas Skatium in Garland as one of 12 members of Viva La Revolucion, Shandra Simpson is debuting as a member of the Assassination City Roller Derby gets a write up in the news. I love this description:
"Comfortably ensconced in fishnet stockings and several coats of makeup, Shandra Simpson swivels her head to make fully certain she isn't about to get cracked from behind. She continues on at a leisurely pace, cruising around the rink eyeing her next victim like a lion set to pounce on an antelope. Steadying herself for the obligatory confrontation, Simpson launches through the air with projectile precision, flooring her opponent in a cantankerous collision. The jolt rocks the very core of Simpson, who is dazed enough to be dreaming. But in her world this is reality. She is a roller girl."

Andrew May wrote that and I like it. Good Look, Shannon!

Serious business - Bad news for Seattle WA

I got this bulletined to me on myspace. You gotta join in on this one.. another derby home in danger... I am giving credit to what I know, this was bulletined by the Halifax Rollergirls seems to have originated in Vancouver, and if you are friends with the Rat City Rollergirls, let them know I'm behind them too! Save the spaces!

"REPOSTED:
Hey roller derby lovers:
Our amazing American cousins in Seattle are in danger of losing their home. Please show your support for one of the top derby leagues on the planet and fire off a strongly-worded email to the Seattle City Council.

We here in Vancouver totally sympathize with the hardships of finding space to hold events. If Seattle loses their space, we'll have fewer opportunities to watch our derby mentors play, and women's amateur sports will take a huge hit.

The City of Seattle Parks Department is marching forward to privatize Hangar 27 but it's possible that even if the City Council can stop them and approve a Community Collaboration Proposal, the city will down H27 in 2008 for design, approval and repairs to the facility.

Your signatures helped get the Seattle City Council’s attention, but now we need your letters of support expressing:

1. Why Hangar 27 is special to you and should be kept public.

2. Why it is important for them to give the Community Collaboration Proposal a chance

3. Why during 2008, the facility should remain open and why any construction and repairs should be phased to allow special events to continue

In 2006 Hangar 27 was booked 25 weekends, served 70,000 citizens and was utilized by the following groups:

Rat City Rollergirls
Cascade Bicycle
Lakeside Sale
Best of the Northwest Art Shows
Danskin Triathlon
VW Club "Bug In"
Arboretum Foundation Plant Sale
Salmon Homecoming Native American Pow Wow
IWASIH Boys & Girls Club
Muckleshoot Nation Canoes Family Journey
Blacksmiths
Roofing Contractors Exposition
Resolution Run
Motorcycle Safety
Barn Owl Society

If privatization does occur, many, if not all, of these groups will be shut out, including the
Rat City Rollergirls. Please show your support of these groups and voice that you are against the privatization of Hangar 27 .

Write or call the Seattle City Council and tell them how you feel:

Long Island Roller Rebels Pink vs. Black-Charity Bout

From myspace: "On Saturday April 14th the Long Island Roller Rebels-Long Island's ONLY all female roller derby league, will be holding an exhibition bout featuring players from all three home teams. The beer tent will be open for tailgating from 6pm throughout the night, and doors will open at 7pm and at this time you can catch the Midnight Creeps, a female fronted punk band from Rhode Island playing rifs that will rock your socks off! The whistle blows at 8pm and you will be introduced to new skaters and also remember some of your old favorites! Be sure not to miss this event! The roller rebels have been working hard to bring up their game and half the proceeds of this bout will be given to the Suffolk County Coalition Against Domestic Violence. We will also have NEW merchandise for sale as well as a special prize for the winner of our raffle! "

A tailgate party before a roller derby bout... man that is awesome and I'd so be settin that up for my team! Roller Derby... ahhhhh it's as good as a Montreal Canadiens vs Toronto Maple Leafs playoff hockey game at the Bell Centre... (I wouldn't insult The Forum to say it's as good as that) but it's so my favorite thing. And I can't afford the hockey ticket prices anyway, but I can go to a lot of derby games if I'm not playing in them! :)

Florida Rollergirls know how to do derby

So I came across a news story on a local Florida station where the girls made me laugh taking over the mic from the news guy, and then I heard Lit'L Arson Annie talk about having two concussions and still going... way to go Annie! These girls are fast and I would love it if my league gets successful enough to afford for us to travel to go play in other places... Florida would be awesome... like in February when it's -30C here in Montreal... hahaha

I want to hear from you other roller derby leagues out there... we're having a heck of a time finding space to play our season... how did you convince the building and arena owners that don't know what roller derby is and are scared you or the crowds will be too violent to let you get in there and play? Do they price gouge you for the privilege? You can respond to me by email or you can just comment here!

You can check out the Florida Rollergirls and see the news story on their site.

It's Saint Patrick's Day, don'tcha know?

Hey, did you know roller skating was invented by a Belgian music instrument manufacturer? Yeah, I know.. but I hear this rumour that although credited to Josef Merlin from Huy, it's possible that roller skating was actually invented in the 1800s by an Irishman... but I can find no internet or otherwise based proof to back that up other than where I saw it in another blog. If anyone has anything send it over to info at derbyluv.com or add it to the comments. I am just not sure!

My roller derby leaguemates and I, will be bundled up against a March cold snap here in Montreal and proudly skating (or walking - it's supposed to snow 25 cm over the next 24 hours (say a foot of snow) in the 2007 Montreal St. Patrick's Day Parade. You can watch snapshots of the parade and try to catch us by watching the webcam from the corner of Peel and St-Catherine in Montreal. Here's an idea, chug a green beer everytime you spot a rollergirl!

In other news, the TRD (Tucson Roller Derby) kicks off their 4th season on St Patrick's Day. $50 season passes (all 8 home games) are on sale now!

Vexy Clothing launches Roller Derby Themed Campaign

Vexy Clothing released their 2007 clothing line marketing campaign this week, and they're showing the Derby Luv by making it roller derby-centric.

Georgia W Tush, skater and captain and L'il Homewrecker, a skater, both of the MTL Roller Derby League, and my teammates, appear in their photo shoot along with their models, and there is an MTL Roller Derby video clip show right on their site.

It's made me like their clothing line even more now that I know they're backing the rollergirls!
