Jam! Tales from the Derby Girls: Do you have a story?

UPDATED: 3:17 PM EST

Have you ever seen an email come in, then for some reason you just sort of missed it, and then a couple weeks later you go, OMG! Did I respond to that? Well, my apologies go out to OniPress, because I did it to them! Sorry, Jill!

So here's the scoop, OniPress, in association with Rose City Rollers would like you to submit your roller derby stories, they will be rendered into comic book format by artists that are waiting for your submissions to make you look awesome!

There are some stipulations, you can get all the information here. Looks like you gotta be a WFTDA member ( see the WFTDA logo/sponsorship), but since talking to Jill at OniPress, I found out they will, for now, accept Canadian rollergirl submissions, since Canadian teams are waiting for admittance to WFTDA, but Canada submissions will be pending WFTDA and league approval. I'd say Montreal, Hamilton... who else plays US WFTDA teams a lot?

Anyway, refs and announcers, you can participate too!

But hurry! Get your pens moving! Because I was a bone-head, the deadline is fast approaching! Get your stories in by December 31, for your chance to be in the book! Comic artists are lined up and have ink ready.

Hmmm... can I think of a funny enough story that will get me in by Dec 31? I do have that product review, a professional certification exam, work, that scarf to knit and Christmas to do... but you never know! Oh, I am not a member of WFTDA and I don't play with those US teams anymore. I am a FCDG derby girl now!

MRD uses Derby Luv artwork for promotion!

The rollergirls of Maine Roller Derby are having a fundraiser, and I was proud to be asked if they could use the Derby Luv original arwork, now used on our wallpaper, as art on their flyer. Good luck with the fundraiser, MRD and I am glad you are reading Derby Luv!

Montreal Photographer exhibits Roller Derby

A local Montreal Photographer has made her latest exhibit all about Roller Derby. The subjects: MTL Roller Derby girls, as well as Lehigh Valley girls from our All-Star game of 2007. The enlarged best photos in frames, are available from the exhibit at Blizzarts at 3956A St-Laurent in Montreal... but be prepared to pay for K-Dawgs' face planting, legs-up fall, Jess Bandit's cutoff shorts, or Boxcar Bethy's face to be hung on your living room wall. The book of the entire collection of full-color photographic masterpieces? Only $50.

Susan has captured everything from the anxiousness of a team waiting to play, to the tiredness and anger in a game, to the party and celebration of an excited crowd. She even caught some falls that can make you cringe. Not to forget the fishnets, and crotch shots. The Montreal Gazette said:

Her latest exhibit, Roller Derby, captures the grit and beauty of the sport
she describes as "burlesque on wheels." Moss has created a crazy, sexy
kaleidoscope of pink laces, neon green fishnets, blue mouth guards, red lipstick
and purple rollerskates.

"It's all about strong, independent, tough, hot
chicks," Moss says.

I was at the vernissage with other MLTRD girls, including Georgia W Tush last night, and I have to tell you, the photos are awesome! And being devoted to roller derby? Well that wins my heart right there. Your very own Nia Capps did not play in the games that were shot and usually shies away from the camera so you won't find her there, but Miss Georgia W Tush shows up for sure...

Thanks to Susan for the book, and to Blizzarts for hosting the exhibit for the month. You can find Susan Moss Photography at http://www.susanmossphotography.com/index.html She does great work, and she likes Roller Derby!

Roller Derby Sculpture

Somewhere in Connecticut there is a sculpture by artist Carole Eisner, purchased by The Greater Hartford Arts Council for the Riverfront Recapture Project, entitled simply, "Roller Derby".

And it looks a little something like this:

To see more photos of this roller derby sculpture, there are different angles posted on Ms. Eisner's website.

The Art(work) of Roller Derby

Artist Derek A. Hauffe has created, among some other truly brilliant illustrated work, some roller girl character concepts for a roller derby video game to show off his tremendous skills using the Unreal3 game engine:

"These are some concepts for the different teams, each of which will have a slender girl and a bigger girl. The first image is a pencil sketch idea for the "baseline" team, fairly realistic (but a little cartoony). The next image is a pencil sketch idea for the big girl on another, more sci-fi team. It shows the original sketch, and then the painted version which I did in Photoshop."
