Interview with Viaderby's Estro Jen

Estro Jen took some time to sit down with Georgia W Tush and tell us about VIa Derby and her involvement with Roller Derby. Did you know you can pass 9 Roller Derby Leagues in an hour drive in California? How about that Estro Jen founded Via Derby, and also is into training skaters, fundraising for leagues and promoting Roller Derby as a whole to the entire world?

[This post was previouslyy the entire article by Georgia W Tush and has been edited by Nia Capps for space considerations]

Wrecked, Wrecks, and Moving up!

So in the past two weeks, I've been kinda quiet, I know. The kickoff to the holiday season has come with a bang. I enjoyed a drunkfest with my Contrabanditas teammates two weekends ago that left me hurtin on Saturday morning... I was hungover and seem to remember being made to make prank calls to friends, and stumbling down some stairs... hahah

This weeked I had a day job work party with an open bar that went well, I wasn't that drunk, but the cab I was in on the way home decided to pull out into traffic and get us hit right in front of my building, so that was fun... *yeah right*

In other news, I have Chet Wisconsin, a ref for the Central City Roller Derby in the UK, becoming a blogger for Derby Luv - this week will be his premiere! And a new Rollergirl piece on the Little Rock Derby Girls has been agreed upon so watch to meet some Little Rock rollergirls!

I am big on the dreams for Derby Luv, but need help. I am still looking for Canadian skaters that might want to play a game as a Derby Luv team at Rollercon 2008 (if i can get us a team to play against and get permission from RollerCon to be in a scrimmage with our name) - We have about 6 confirmed players from Vancouver to Montreal, so if you want to be on the team, contact me! We need to start talking options and fundraising.

Derby Luv wants to do a better job, so if you have any suggestions for stories, or ideas on what you'd like to see more of, let me know!

Don't forget to visit the Derby Luv Skate Shop Rollergirl on your list this year, and check out the store for Derby Luv Merchandise. If you grab a promo code from the link below, you'll enjoy Free Shipping from our skate shop! All proceeds from the skate shop and out merchandise store will go towards making Derby Luv able to continue and grow, with travel and the Derby Luv Canadian Rollergirls able to go skate!

Assassination City Roller Derby 2008 Calendar

So my friend, Trigger Mortis, from Assassination City Roller Derby was my first contact when I heard a few weeks ago about their new Calendar coming out. I wish my league had been able to pull this off this year, but alas, I will love vicariously through my roller derby friends from afar.

Trigger says:

The theme of the calendar is basically "the businesses and events that make Dallas cool, and how Assassination City fits into the mix with making Dallas the place to be. Each of the businesses will be selling the calendars for us, also,
because it benefits them, too, to have their name out there!

The ACRD girls (you can meet some of them in the Rollergirls section of Derbyluv.com) meant the calendar to show how roller derby is one of the great, cool things to do in Dallas, along with the other stuff going down in the south. I have to say, I've been to Dallas and Fort Worth and I loved it there. I hope I get to go back and I will definitely be hanging with ACRD!

Congrats, ACRD! I hope they sell like hotcakes! If you're in Dallas check out ACRD for info on the signing party Dec 7th!

Derby Luv Online Roller Derby Shop is Open for Business!

My new friends, Estro Jen and Diesel from over at ViaDerby have been very helpful, and Derby Luv has partnered up with them to bring you more resources. You can now shop for skates, accessories, protective gear, even clothing, right from a derby luv skate shop. Check out the DERBY LUV SKATE SHOP

Any and all proceeds will go to pay for this site, to help out the writers, and leagues that are contributing, and will funnel directly into getting Derby Luv at every derby event within reach in the coming new year.

So shop long, shop well... pick me up a pair of those Riedell Wickeds with red grip Radar wheels, red laces and webstoppers... (the webstoppers from Rollergirl.ca, of course) and I will be your new best friend! ;) Just Kidding! But I will accept donations towards them LOL

And when you're all done there, roll on over to viaderby.com. It's worth the visit. I hope to make it on the wall of pain with my old leg injury image... you know the one...

In other news, the MTLRD All-Stars won over Hudson Valley on Oct 28, Hamilton played She-Devils in OSDA game last week, and Sara of Rat City Rollergirls, and Fast Girl Skates will be in Montreal tomorrow for practice. I hope I can get a chance around my leaguemates to talk to her! Wish me luck!

iShoe: Motorized Shoes / Roller Skates?

Tired of the hassle of having to actually move your legs and feet when you are roller skating or, heck, even just every day walking around? Fret not! You can now be scooting along at speeds of up to 15 mph with a 5-7 mile range on just one battery charge thanks to the inventors of iShoes!

Ottawa Roller Derby visits MTLRD

So our usual Sunday practices were cancelled yesterday as we had our next to last Boot Camp for MTLRD for newbies and recruitment in the morning, and then the Ottawa Roller Derby girls came out and for "practice" we did some mini-scrimmages.

MTLRD ALL-Stars are hard into practice for the game on Oct 28th The Frankenskate!

Hey, those Ottawa girls got a good dose of what they need to do with the All-Stars and award winning jammers, Georgia W Tush, Iron Wrench and Cat Attack burning up the track... what a great training experience! And it helps remind you how far you've come to help out and cheer on a new team that's starting out.

Thanks, Ottawa! You're own your way and looking good! Thanks for the practice!

And note to self: Remember for the Christmas list - an old bike tire to make new toe protectors out of (cause it just looks cooler and it's cheaper than buying new ones every few months) , some new wheels - my Blue Demons for games on concrete and outdoors - but I need something for wood floors.

If you win the lottery of find a long lost unknown rich relatives inheritances, some Riedell 265s would be good because the 1000s are a bit tight on my toes! And a Derby Luv T-Shirt and some gifts for friends! - geez get with it, Nia!

haha later everyone!

Rolling through EBay

Okay, I'll admit it. Surfing through EBay for hard to find roller derby merchandise probably isn't a very productive use of my time, but I did manage to find some oddities:

Roller Dancing For Fun And Fitness LP - and me without a record player!

Roller Derby Catnip Toy - Is it wrong to want to replace all of my cat's toys with roller dery related stuff?

Sexy Roller Derby Outfit - This doesn't look anything like my roller derby uniform. Yikes!

DerbyLuv was at RollerCon 2007!

I hear there were people that knew of DerbyLuv at RollerCon. Well, Derby Luv was there, in the form of our co-blogger, Georgia W Tush, as well as worn by my teammate, Trash N Smash, as shown here.
Thanks to Trash for wearing the DL swag, and look, the shirts are pretty freakin awesome. Maybe if we can sell enough shirts Derby Luv will be at RollerCon 2008 in full force. *hint hint*

Roller Derby Merchandising

We all know the first staple of the merch table for a roller derby league comes down to what you can either do DIY style, or what you can afford out of pocket until you sell those tickets and get a good fundraiser turnout. Once you've made it through a successful season or 5, what kind of stuff can you then sell, and what is out there?

Well, almost every league I have come across so far has the standard team and league T-shirts. There are variations, tank tops, long sleeved long style tops, but it's shirts. Some at games make water bottle noise makers. There's pins, tiny and large galore. Stickers and more stickers. (I LOVE STICKERS and magnets by the way) There's CafePress for ship per order stuff, and then there's the leagues with some sponsors or cash that have a stockpile of merch. Below are a few new or interesting things I found.

Rat City Rollergirls in Seattle are releasing their own trading cards July 29th. They also have a Roller Derby Music compilation CD for sale. I am impressed with this league. Did you know about Fast Girl Skates out in Seattle? I contacted them for some info and an interview, but I guess I did it wrong, but it's awesome that there is a roller derby retail store, owned by and there for rollergirls. Hopefully they will get in touch sometime.

The Sin City Rollergirls in my favorite vacation destination, Las Vegas, NV sell prints of their bout posters.

The Texas Rollergirls have shot glasses and beer koozies along the trucker hats.

There are pin-up and roller derby calendars, embroidered patches, and the like.
After scrolling through 25 or so leagues at random from the list of leagues on Wikipedia, I have to offer up this:

If there's a league out there still only using myspace that needs some website design done, give me a shout and I'll cut you a good deal with a good designer to get you started if you haven't yet recruited a webgeek like me onto your league. Myspace is cool for networking, but man... the designs make my head hurt *hahaha* Just Kidding, Myspace.

Support your local roller derby and buy stuff!

Derby Luv Merchandise

So just to insure that our Derby Luv store merchandise was worthy to provide for our posters and readers and such, I ordered a T shirt, a ceramic coaster for my desk and a button. I was happy with the results, the merchandise is beautiful and the logo looks awesome on black.

I'll be wearing my Derby Luv t shirt to The White Stripes concert on Friday night at the Bell Centre in Montreal. I got two tickets and their latest CD, Icky Thump by winning them this morning. Thanks, Global Montreal This Morning Live!

In other news, I went for a lovely skate last night around the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve race track with my teammate LizOnYa and a couple fresh meat girls that want to join MTLRD in the fall. I have to say that giving pointers to others (like teaching anything) helps to teach me and helps me remember the same tips too.

I am skating so much better these days, lower, more maneuverable, and have stamina to boot. Would I like to train to be a jammer? Absolutely! Can I be a good jammer? I don't know... if I get my speed up I might be better as a jammer than a blocker because I'm more about getting out of and away from crowds than looking behind me and staying in them in real life.... we shall see next year.

Derby Luv Virtual Merch Table

I am happy to say that the Derby Luv store is open for business and the new-look designs are looking pretty sharp, if I say so myself.

Aside from showing your love for roller derby and of our site here, it'll also put some coins in the tip jar to help keep this site running, keep my gear in top shape, and hopefully maybe even get my butt to Las Vegas for Rollercon next year.

Hey, a rollergirl can dream, can't she?

Derby League opens up Roller Derby Skate Shop in Seattle

The Rat City Rollergirls opened Fast Girl Skates in Seattle WA on Friday evening.
My brain just went... wow! Sorry I don't live in Seattle, that's the coolest think I've ever heard!

It was a bulletin on their myspace:
That’s right! You’ve asked, you’ve waited (almost patiently) for the big, fat opening of the first brick and mortar roller derby retail store in Seattle, and here it is!! FRIDAY, MARCH 16, 2007 From 6:00 PM until the food and drinks are gone! Come try on skates! Come look at the great selection of helmets and pads! Laces and socks and wheels, oh my! Merch from Rat City and other local leagues, happily sharing one space! The CUTEST practice clothes you’ve ever seen! Come give us your ideas and feedback as we build our inventory!!
Fast Girl Skates
252 NE 45th St.
Seattle, WA 98105
206.274-8250
www.fastgirlskates.com

As I just had a great experience buying new bearings at Underworld, a skate shop here in Montreal, I am a bit jealous because we can't get the brands of wheels we need here, and practice clothes... well it's American Apparel, whatever we can make, our gym clothes... extra team t-shirts, and there' s nothing wrong with that, but man a roller derby retail store?

Neat! I wish Fast Girl Skates a lot of luck, and hope that the success becomes known everywhere and that skate shops will start stocking for roller derby.
