New Minimum Skill Requirements in July from WFTDA

The NEW minimum skating skills from WFTDA were released recently. I finally had a chance tonight to read through the changes at DNN and then go look at the new requirements.

Even after playing a season in Montreal previously, I will need to test myself after a year off and now this darn injury. The New updates?

1) Instead of 5 laps/min, 20 laps/5 min, the speed and endurance requirement is now 25 laps in 5 minutes. We have to get faster to keep up with the faster and more competitive teams out there. Now I don't have a space to practice in on a regulation track, so how to know? I'll figure something out at the location rink to test myself! I used to be able to do about 22-23 before I was working out, let's see if I am fast enough!

2) Instead of just stops, the two required stops are the T-stop (got it) and the Plow Stop. That one is tough. Not everyone can plow stop from a brisk pace to a complete stop. I mean I can do it, but its not the floor squeaking, wheel breaking quick stop I want it to be. I just have never gotten it down pat 100% with 100% consistency. Ok, when my ankle lets me, I'll get it right now!

3) Hops: Now not just hopping one foot to the other and hops, now it's to hop over something with a minimum of 3 inches in height. I don't jump well, but can hop, and I think I can do a small 3 inches so I'm okay there. I am nervous though about increasing height requirements for jumps. I have never gotten over my bad mechanics on jumping and never gotten over my jumping onto/over things fear. If anyone has tips on getting air for someone air-challenged, heavy, big, tall, and wussy... let me know! LOL

4) Laterals - 3 in straightaway and two in turns - laterals from one side of track to the other. I think I have that one - have to test myself on turns on our skinny track. I know straights I am okay.

5) Hip whips.. hip whips... oh yeah, you mean steal momentum - got it. Ok there!

6) The 40-question skills test to give to your league's skaters. Love it. Standardized testing that is skill and game specific. 85% required to pass. I've studied, I think I can pass it!

All in all, it's a sign of the increasing competitiveness and athletic ability in the land of WFTDA that the minimum skills have now increased, and they will continue to do so. It's awesome. I'm willing to work harder to get into all-star status before I retire, so here I come WFTDA-world!

In other news, on day 19 (if you are on my facebook) you saw, I woke up to a stretch that hurt, did a circular range of motion on my ankle and POW it popped. All day achy, sore... not so bad though, no lump. Look down at 4 pm and UH OH, it's all swollen again. No skating for you. But it HAS to heal, I have to get it rehabbed and re-strengthened and back on skate, I HAVE to meet requirements and get to training because I finally am back on a roster for FCDG games in Sept and October as long as I get back to practice, heal, and stay un-injured! WOOT! I HAVE TO get better!

Any tips on rehab are appreciated, I want to be back NOW!

Everyone else is packing for RollerCon and I am trying to heal and planning a potential last minute overnight roadtrip to Montreal to maybe see MTL and pick up the mother-in-law if Via Rail strikes. Otherwise, I'll be relaxing and trying to heal this ankle somehow....

I'll let you know tomorrow the final list of Canadian league bouts I've been sent for this weekend so you can check them out. Between that and WHIP IT movie trailer and Comic Con appearance excitement, my derby widow doesn't even want to go see a bout cause he's sick of roller derby. He says I talk about roller derby, training for roller derby, injuries, rules, skates, plans, recruiting and my day job and that's about it. I said, well, who has time for more than that? LOL Sorry honey, you're married to a rollergirl, I'll try to mix in some other sports, current events and other news sometimes!

OMG - January is over?!

OMG! January is over! I can't believe how time is flying. It's been over 4 months since I became a non-smoking rollergirl-to-be-again, and a month since I re-committed myself to training for 2009.

I've lost 2-3 inches from my waistline, and 3 from my hips, and can jog again without shin pain.... so I'm ready to go back to skating if I can find some wood or concrete to put my wheels on under all this ice and snow! I'll know within a week if I get my new apartment in London, ON, and I'm waiting for some news from FCDG on particulars like, What minimum skill levels do I have to pass to play in April? What days are practices? How much are dues? You know, all that kinda need to know, but organizational info about a new league...

Hey I may already know roller derby, but I'll be a rookie in FCDG, so I'm getting to have a new derby experience this year! My previous rookie year was with MTLRD when we were all rookies together. I am so proud that I was part of the first season of MTLRD and that they are the first Canadian Roller Derby league to officially become a WFTDA league. If other Canadian teams want to join, what's holding them up? I'll see if I can find out!

Well, let's not dwell on me all damn day - you need to get to doing derby stuff, so here's the current Facebook Event listing for you - Yes, I know you are all on Facebook.... But PING.FM is the best for status updates everywhere at once!

Jam! Tales from the Derby Girls: Do you have a story?

UPDATED: 3:17 PM EST

Have you ever seen an email come in, then for some reason you just sort of missed it, and then a couple weeks later you go, OMG! Did I respond to that? Well, my apologies go out to OniPress, because I did it to them! Sorry, Jill!

So here's the scoop, OniPress, in association with Rose City Rollers would like you to submit your roller derby stories, they will be rendered into comic book format by artists that are waiting for your submissions to make you look awesome!

There are some stipulations, you can get all the information here. Looks like you gotta be a WFTDA member ( see the WFTDA logo/sponsorship), but since talking to Jill at OniPress, I found out they will, for now, accept Canadian rollergirl submissions, since Canadian teams are waiting for admittance to WFTDA, but Canada submissions will be pending WFTDA and league approval. I'd say Montreal, Hamilton... who else plays US WFTDA teams a lot?

Anyway, refs and announcers, you can participate too!

But hurry! Get your pens moving! Because I was a bone-head, the deadline is fast approaching! Get your stories in by December 31, for your chance to be in the book! Comic artists are lined up and have ink ready.

Hmmm... can I think of a funny enough story that will get me in by Dec 31? I do have that product review, a professional certification exam, work, that scarf to knit and Christmas to do... but you never know! Oh, I am not a member of WFTDA and I don't play with those US teams anymore. I am a FCDG derby girl now!

NorthWest Knockdown - WFTDA 2008 Nationals - Gotham takes it!

If you are like me and you were unable to travel to the NorthWest Knockdown, and maybe your internet was down or you were so down-trodden you couldn' t bear to watch the scores roll out online, or you were playing in one of the other games or at yoour own league's event this past weekend and you just woke up....

Well, if you are one of these people, you had to wait for the results like I did!

MVP Bonnie Thunders (Gotham Girls)
MVZ Endless Justin (Gotham Girls)
On a side note; a special congrats go out to one of you favorite stats geek and his new fiancee: Hurt Reynolds proposed to Mercyless in a heart felt and loving fashion the only way Hurty could. Down on one knee he professed his love and asked her to marry him. It was absolutely beautiful.

BTW: She said yes and a huge cheer came from their biggest family of roller derby girls and boys from around the world.
DAMN, I've been to 2 derby proposals and 2 derby weddings. I [heart] the roller derby familes and the tight knit community it has become.

I'd also like to thank Viagrra Falls from Rose City who put's up with me every time I come to Portland. She rocks! It was so great to see old friends and new ones here this past weekend and those of you went here...I sure missed seeing you again. I look forward to hopefully getting to Nationals next year in Philly and if not there is always Regionals next September.
See you at RollerCon 09
xoxo Sour Cherry

Congratulations to the Gotham City Roller Girls on their 2008 National Champiionship Win!
and a special heart of Congratulations to Hurt Reynolds and Mercyless!

WFTDA Nationals 2008 - NorthWest Knockdown!

I was checking on my mostly dormant myspace account today and got the news on the tickets for the NW knockdown!

The top 8 teams in the US are battling for the #1 position after clawing their way into Nationals from the East and West Coast Regional Tournaments in early October. (Battle Royale and Derby in Dairyland Regionals events)

Will the champion be a top-seeded team, or will we see another upset?2008 has been greatly a surprising year, so anyone could take this year's nationals!
West Coast
Seed 1 = Texas Rollergirls
Seed 2 = B. ay A. rea D. erby Girls
Seed 3 = Rat City Rollergirls
Seed 4 = Duke City Derby

East Coast
Seed 1 = Gotham Girls
Seed 2 = Windy City Rollers
Seed 3 = Philly Rollergirls
Seed 4 = Carolina Rollergirls

Official WFTDA rankings
TicketsGuaranteed bleacher seating - $100
General admission - $75

You can find more info on the NW Knockdown official website.
As a NC girl that is now in Canada, in lieu of no Canadian entries, I have to say I'm hopeful the Carolina Rollergirls can take this, but my feeling is we are looking at a bang up year for Gotham, and Texas is the team to beat. Course, the top 4 East and West are so good, I can't call this one at all.

Are you going to be there? Wanna put your two cents into the event, what happened, how it turns out, and share with others the low-down on the 2008 WFTDA Nationals? Contact me at info @ derbyluv.com and you can blog it on Derby Luv.

Rollergirl.ca and Derby Luv Stop Smoking Challenge Update:
Nia Capps has made it 41 days into her 90 day challenge and had not smoked. After parties, a death in the family, a chain-smoking sister... nothing compares to the draw of roller derby and roller skating on these new Kryptonic Route 65 wheels when it's nice out.....

Raven Von Kaos was inspired and is on her own stop smoking journey. If she makes it, she gets some gifts from Derby Luv. If she fails, she owes us money. Hey, if you are a rollergirl and want a stop smoking challenge, contact info @ derbyluv.com

Later derby luvvers!

Eastern Regional Finals - Derby in Dairyland results

Of course, I was off skating and doing the Thanksgiving thing, and my Twitter feed didn't work to my mobile so I was terribly out of the loop, but thanks to the great people over at the Derby News Network - we have archived bout casts, and full tournament results write ups to read today.

Enjoy!

Derby weekend in the making!

So from a fan perspective, this weekend is HUGE!

First off, there's Derby in Dairyland, which is the place to be for WFTDA Eastern Regionals action. DNN is still preparing for the weekend event, but you can sign up to follow the scores if you aren't available to watch all the boutcasts, and can receive updates on your mobile. Check out DNN for more info, or twitter.com and search for WFTDA and Derbynewsnetwork.

Wisconsin press is well aware of the Mad Rollin' Dolls hosted WFTDA event, with these two articles appearing today:
The Guide
Dane101: An Interview with the Grand Raggidy All Stars

But, if you aren't going to make it to Dairyland, and you're on the twitter updates on your cell and are free to roam around, and you're not travelling somewhere for Canadian turkey day, you can enjoy other derby activities this weekend. Did you know that not only is it Columbus Day in the US next Monday, it's Canadian Thanksgiving, so it's a long weekend. So, check out Hammer City (2nd place non-WFTDA class at Fall Brawl 2008) as they drive down to play The Chicago Outfit (5-2 season, winner of Fall Brawl non-WFTDA class 2008) this weekend. HCRG! HCRG! HCRG! I'll see if I can convince one of the girls to text me updates. - A rematch after Fall brawl - this is goona be a great game.

I'll be driving to Montreal on Saturday, and plan a Derby Luv, Canadian Thanksgiving Sunday Morning Skate. (1st annual), that I am hooking up the event on facebook tonight. 9:30 Am - 10 AMish start time, Gilles-Villeneuve Formula One Track in Montreal, bring your own quads, coffee and water, and let's skate!

If you're in the northeast US, you can see some Maine Roller Derby action this weekend. After the Pennsylvania opponents had to cancel last minute, (the danger of roller derby), the Calamity Janes and the Port Authorities, split into two teams, Team Wicked and Team Good for a mixed up roster bout on Saturday.

Just because it's fall, and hockey arenas everywhere in Canada have laid down ice, this goes to show you, it ain't done yet! I even started working on the 2nd annual, Derby Luv US Thanksgiving with the Blue Ridge rollergirls today. We'll know more as we get closer, but the plane ticket is purchased, the vacation is booked from work, and I am ready....

Roller Derby Round-Up for Oct 4-12

Derby in Dairyland, the WFTDA Easter Regionals Tournament is on this weekend, Oct 10-12.
There are several things to take note of for this event.
1) The Charitable events by the Mad Rollin' Dolls and the party schedule
2) The Bout schedule, of course, and the top seeds - DNN is travelling but watch out as we get closer to the day.
3) Texas won over Bay Area 135-59 final at the Battle Royale Western Regionals last weekend. If you weren't watching the stream and games on DNN last week, where were you?! Oh and Rice Rocket of TXRD... I'd like to see her and Iron Wrench of Montreal jamming it out. My god what a bout that would be! New Skidz, please, saddle up and get it on with TXRD in 09!

LA Derby Dolls introduced their new team, the Varsity Brawlers on the 4th. But, sadly, I don't see an update on the LA Dolls website yet to link to. I'll keep my eyes open. I'm on a blackberry now, so if you send events to me on Facebook, I'll be able to see them and post them on the run.

Rein Valley Vixens Need Skaters: The Rein Valley Vixens, of the Lower Mainland Roller Derby out in B.C. are doing some fundraising and are in recruitment to add skaters to their league for the next season. Check that out! New leagues, I adore!

Derby Team Splits in Two! Albany, NY is the scene of a split in a league where the dispute stemmed over the "MORE FIGHTS" "LESS SHOW", "MORE WORK""MORE PLAY" doctrines of roller derby. I've seen this before. Some people love the aspects of roller derby that includes the characterization, attitude, showiness, dressup, and battles/fights/show-off moves, while others are athletic and want the uniforms to reflect sports uniforms more, and want the organization of a true athletic commitment with more discipline, work, and competitiveness.

The good thing about roller derby is that you can have both, but I see this becoming more and more common as those that got into roller derby for the attitude and fun, are slowly separated from the more competitive and serious skaters that want to rank in WFTDA and be #1 at all costs. And don't forget the teams that are also split because they prefer OSDA rules, or have co-ed teams. Roller Derby is awesome in all it's flavors, so just remember, there's different kinds of roller derby, and all of it is a good time!

Of course, if there's news on "Whip It", I'm watching!:
An Ari Graynor Quote on Whip it! is in a recent interview she did for her upcoming movie projects. (You may need to scroll down a bit, it's near the end). I'd like to send a Derby Luv T-Shirt to Drew Barrymore, so I need to find out how to do that.....

Winnipeg Roller Derby is looking for prizes and such from businesses and others for their fundraiser this Saturday. If you can help them, email info@winnipegrollerderbyleague.com
On another note, their social is said to be a way to tell the Conservatives to go... well you know

If you're down under, the Sun State Roller Girls have about in Brisbane on the 11th of October. Hmm plenty of roller derby on the other side of the planet in our winter if we hed to Aussie. There's an idea!

And well, Derby Luv, let's see - well, paper dolls, roller derby events, training and skating aside, Derby Luv is trucking along. If there's anything you want to see or want more of at Derby Luv, just drop me a line at info (at) derbyluv.com.
- Derby luv to ya,

Derby News from all over

Well, I hope Raven's nerves calm and her arm is healing up for tomorrow's game for the Santa Cruz Rollergirls last game of the season vs the Bay Area Derby Girls.

The Big news over at the Derby News Network and in WFTDA realm, of course, is the Fall Brawl tomorrow down in Ft Wayne. Hammer City is on the Non-WFTDA line-up. I hope to get word on how they do after.

In other derby news, The Sault rollergirls in Northern Ontario are looking for new practice space - icing down all the arenas for hockey is a Canadian rite of passage as the cold bite of fall hits the wind, but for derby leagues all over Canada and the northern US, it means a hunt for an indoor place to practice in the winter. How can you come out swinging in the spring for your season, if you can't skate for 7 months of the year? Good luck to them, and if you're in that area and know of a place, Please contact Elora Nelson at (705) 253-2044 or email purple__mascara@hotmail.com check the website:
http://www.saultrollergirls.com/

Next week, MTLRD New Skidz on the Block will be taking on the Brooklyn Bombshells down in Gotham City. If you're on Facebook, Here is the event page. If not, brownpapertickets has tickets, or check out the Gotham Girls site. I haven't heard from Georgia W Tush since she went out on tour with the band, but I hope she's playing and let's us know how that one goes.

Way out in October, watch for a Skate of the Dead, hosted by the Forest City Roller Girls in London, ON. The facebook event says it's October 18. The Forest City Roller Girls website is under construction, so I'm looking out for this league, as they have been playing hard for their first season in 2008. Next year should rock in Ontario and Canada with all the leagues coming up.

In Nia Capps news, I'm in the gym 5 days, count that again, 5 days per week for a 45 minute workout every lunch hour, and I'm skating on the weekends (or if rainy, hiking). I am on an 8 month journey to hit the GTA Rollergirls in April when I get ready to slide a little back east into Mississauga and Toronto area, ready to kick ass. Hopefully, I'll still get to a couple of practices with HCRG in the interim, or with GTA. Slapallonia may hook me up.

Everything is going great. Ok ok, so I had a bad reaction to some Novocaine after a dentist visit yesterday and today I am resting because my face is numb and tingly and I'm nauseated. But shut up, I am doing AWESOME!

In Derby Luv news, I have a new short sleeved Derby Luv T-shirt, along with a long-sleeved Derby Luv T-Shirt on their way to keep me Derby Luv style for my around towns, and a big shout out and thanks to everyone that has decided to wear their Derby Luv this year!

On my project list I have a product review for some derby-inspired toys, and I'm waiting to see if I can get an interview with the derby girl that won $35k on a game show. Do you know what I am talking about? Hmmm, a derby trivia quiz for your weekend!

Oh yeah, and a fellow Southern Belle, an Atlanta Rollergirl was chosen as a skater for "Whip It!" - a body double stunt woman skater I should say, as a body double for Eve. That is awesome! I wonder who I could body double for... hmmmm Wynona Judd? Screw that, by April it'll be for Xena. ;)

Happy Friday, Derby Luvvers. Saturday always bring Roller Derby!

Contact: Mercy Less
Marketing/PR Chair, WFTDA
marketing@.. .

The Women's Flat Track Derby Association is proud to announce that membership is now open to Canadian Leagues! The WFTDA has overcome administrative and legal hurdles to take this exciting first step towards becoming a global organization. Our northern sisters will be eligible if they meet the membership requirements put forth for all WFTDA leagues:

-75 % of games must be flat track

-Teams in league must be comprised of female quad skaters only.

-51% of league owners must be flat track derby skaters.

-67% of league management must be flat track derby skaters

For additional requirements and paperwork, go online to:
http://www.wftda.com/membership.

Since 2004, the WFTDA has promoted and fostered the sport of women's flat track derby. The governing philosophy 'of the skaters, for the skaters' is adopted by all fifty-two member leagues who include women as primary owners, managers, operators and skaters. All member leagues have a voice in the decision making process and are entitled to be nationally ranked, play standardized games and access to future sponsorship opportunities.

Interview with Viaderby's Estro Jen

Estro Jen took some time to sit down with Georgia W Tush and tell us about VIa Derby and her involvement with Roller Derby. Did you know you can pass 9 Roller Derby Leagues in an hour drive in California? How about that Estro Jen founded Via Derby, and also is into training skaters, fundraising for leagues and promoting Roller Derby as a whole to the entire world?

And so it begins...

Alright, so perhaps one of my new year's resolutions will be to write more derbyluv posts. Honestly though, I have been sitting on my tush for the last month. Thus leading to my next resolution, to get back into shape. Mostly, so I don't feel like I'm going to die after 20 laps. There was far too much snacking that took place over the holidays, and not enough derby.

On to much more important things...Roller Con '08 dates have been announced! July 30th to Aug 3rd! So book your seasons around it ladies, because ya better be going!!! And please reserve a spot for me on your hotel floor, because my travel expenses this year seem to be far greater than my income.

Since we already have our calenders out, these other exciting dates should also be reserved. I swiped them off the WFTDA site.

East Coast Extravaganza hosted by the Philly Rollergirls in Philadelphia, PA
June 21 to 22, 2008

WFTDA Western Regional Tournament hosted by the Houston Roller Derby in Houston, TX
October 3 to 5, 2008

WFTDA Eastern Regional Tournament hosted by the Mad Rollin’ Dolls in Madison, WI
October 10 to 12, 2008

WFTDA Championship Tournament hosted by the Rose City Rollergirls and Rat City Rollergirls in Portland, OR

Kansas City on top

2007 WFTDA National Championships took place over the weekend in Austin, Texas and the Kansas City Roller Warriors surprised us all by defeating Seattle's Rat City Rollergirl's and taking 1st place. Congrats to those ladies, and all of skaters that took part in this event. For more info check out http://www.leadjammer.com/, and where you can check out some play by plays of the bouts. Leadjammer.com was posting live during each game to give all of us back home some live roller derby action. So, check out the site!

I am also stealing some info for next year off the site:

"The intro page of the Texas Shootout program had this little tidbit hiding in the fine print:

2008 WFTDA Tournaments, AUTUMN 2008
Western Regionals - Houston, TX - Oct. 3-5
Eastern Regionals - Madison, WI - Oct. 10-12
2008 Championships - Portland, OR - Nov. 14-16"

See ya there?

New WFTDA Rules V 2.1 - Approved and Live

"WFTDA approves Version 2 rules " My new friend over at Have Derby Will Travel clued me in - I read his blog these days - and I have just finished inserting the new WFTDA rules and regs doc into our recruitment guide for MTL Roller Derby.

You can download the new rules from the WFTDA website.

But Hurt Reynolds was also nice enough to make us a Quick Reference Guide (QRG) cheat sheet on the changes. You can check it out here.
