ShortBus : Dallas Deception Pivot + RollerGirlSkates.com Front Man
How'd you get you start in skating:I started skating 12 years ago. I did inline speed and short track ice for as long as I can remember. I have actually only been skating on quads for a few years.
How did you get involved with roller derby:I got started in derby 4 years ago when I started working for RollerGirlSkates.com. I always went over to the girls practices and all the bouts. When I found out that there was a men's league starting, I went to the first practice and have never stopped!
How'd you get your derby name:Everyone knows how I got my derby name! I can't see at all and everyone thought I should ride the Shortbus, so it kinda stuck. Haha!
What was the hardest obstacle in getting RollerGirlSkates.com out there:The hardest obstacle in getting RollerGirlSkates out there was knowing that there was a ton of other retailers out there that I had to compete with. I just had to make myself better than the rest by giving great service and awesome advice. I am super friendly and am always willing to work around everyone's particular request. I am a skater and am here for all the other skaters that love the same sport that I do, ROLLER DERBY!
What got you into men's derby:I broke my leg in college doing short track ice and after recovering Ladies derby started to get HUGE and eventually a men's league was started. I was tired of not skating anymore so I decided to slap some quads on and have some fun. It had been about 2 years since I had seriously skated and remember how much fun I used to have.
What position do you play:I ALWAYS play pivot but I can be an arsenal Jammer if need be.
How do you play with a visual impairment, you are like a success story in yourself:Everyone in derby knows by now that I am legally blind and cannot see very well, but everyone who has played against me so far knows how well I skate and how well I can adapt. It is very hard to play with a visual impairment but when I skate you cannot tell at all and I am definitely not going to let it hold me back. So all you suckas out there that wanna hate bring the heat!
Favorite derby team:I would have to say my favorite team is the Minnesota Rollergirls. Gotta give a shout out to Jawbreaker, Harmony Killerbruise, and Suzy Smashbox!!
Well since you're deep in the skating industry, give us the heads up, What advice would you give to other people in derby about new product coming out this year?:The biggest thing coming out this year is Heartless wheels. These wheels are made by Mo Sanders AKA Quadzilla formally from Atom wheels. These wheels are the sickest wheels I have ever skated on. I have always been against narrow hubbed wheel but when I tried these I was still able to get all the push I needed along with being able to be more agile on the track. I also hear that Vanilla has an new derby line coming out which is supposed to be pretty sick. Riedell always has and always will have the best derby boots in the market, so we can always look forward for them to come out with new innovating products.
What is the biggest pain about men's derby? The biggest pain about men's derby is a lot of leagues like to pull a lot of hockey skaters that do not know how to play derby and just want to push and kill people, not play derby.
Future plans for RGS and yourself in derby:The biggest plans for RollerGirlSkates in the future is to let the derby world know that RGS is here to help them and all their derby needs. The biggest plans for Short bus in the future is to let everyone know that Dallas Deception is out there and any team that’s want to play us can BRING IT!!!!
