Rollergirl.ca's Annual Sale this weekend!

The RollerGirl.ca Annual Sale starts online at 5PM Pacific Time TODAY (Friday) and ends at 5PM Pacific Time tomorrow (Saturday)!

In-store, the sale begins at Noon on Saturday, and goes until 5PM.

There is only ONE Rollergirl.ca sale a year, and this is it!

If you have questions about skate sizing, or what wheel is best for you, or whether the red laces will match your mouthguard, please contact the store BEFORE the sale starts.

Lisa and Chelsea will not be able to answer the phone or emails during the sale. Contact http://www.rollergirl.ca/ 1-866-900-7655 rollergirl@rollergirl.ca before 5 PM PST/ 8 PM EST tonight or at least before noon tomorrow with questions.

I'm headed there now for a 2009 Season-shopping list to check off at 5 PM PST/8 PM EST if the sale is good on my wishlist. I bet I'll at least come away with some pieces of my new FCDG uniform-wear. No more MTLRD Red/Black, now it's Bright Green or Orange for me. Remember, Rollergirl ships in US and Canada. Happy Hunting, roller derby shoppers....

In Derbyluv news, I apologize for the lack of posts in the derby world these past weeks and for another 1 or 2. I am watching, I'm just getting ready to move next Friday and I've been kinda swamped with packing, training, work, etc. I'll be back full time in April.
L8r Sk8rs! Derbyluv to ya!

Holy Smokes!

Oh my gosh what a whirlwind of a week!

So long story short WE WON! The Santa Cruz Rollergirls All-Star team beat the LA Derby Dolls Sirens 128-122. By score alone you can tell that it was a great game.

The All-Stars came out strong and carried a steady lead into the second half. From a player prospective this was the best game we have ever played as a team. It was fun, clean and challenging - all of my favorite qualities in a game. The LA Girls were amazing athletes and fun girls to hang with at the after party. OH YES that was one crazy after party! Those details stay off line ;)

One the best things to happen during the game was seeing our plays and strategies come alive. We have really been working hard as a team to understand the game of derby and play smarter. One thing I have definitely realized was that we are all great individual skaters, but more importantly WE are an amazing team.

A special thanks to the city of Santa Cruz, all of our fans, sponsors and die-hard supporters! Without you none of this would be possible.

Hugs and bruises,

Raven

Looks can be deceiving - I definitely need some work on my jamming but a good shot none-the-less.

Goofing around with the LA Derby Dolls after the Bout.

Interview: Shortbus( Dallas Deception Men's Derby)

ShortBus : Dallas Deception Pivot + RollerGirlSkates.com Front Man

How'd you get you start in skating:
I started skating 12 years ago. I did inline speed and short track ice for as long as I can remember. I have actually only been skating on quads for a few years.

How did you get involved with roller derby:
I got started in derby 4 years ago when I started working for RollerGirlSkates.com. I always went over to the girls practices and all the bouts. When I found out that there was a men's league starting, I went to the first practice and have never stopped!

How'd you get your derby name:
Everyone knows how I got my derby name! I can't see at all and everyone thought I should ride the Shortbus, so it kinda stuck. Haha!

What was the hardest obstacle in getting RollerGirlSkates.com out there:
The hardest obstacle in getting RollerGirlSkates out there was knowing that there was a ton of other retailers out there that I had to compete with. I just had to make myself better than the rest by giving great service and awesome advice. I am super friendly and am always willing to work around everyone's particular request. I am a skater and am here for all the other skaters that love the same sport that I do, ROLLER DERBY!

What got you into men's derby:
I broke my leg in college doing short track ice and after recovering Ladies derby started to get HUGE and eventually a men's league was started. I was tired of not skating anymore so I decided to slap some quads on and have some fun. It had been about 2 years since I had seriously skated and remember how much fun I used to have.

What position do you play:
I ALWAYS play pivot but I can be an arsenal Jammer if need be.

How do you play with a visual impairment, you are like a success story in yourself:
Everyone in derby knows by now that I am legally blind and cannot see very well, but everyone who has played against me so far knows how well I skate and how well I can adapt. It is very hard to play with a visual impairment but when I skate you cannot tell at all and I am definitely not going to let it hold me back. So all you suckas out there that wanna hate bring the heat!

Favorite derby team:
I would have to say my favorite team is the Minnesota Rollergirls. Gotta give a shout out to Jawbreaker, Harmony Killerbruise, and Suzy Smashbox!!

Well since you're deep in the skating industry, give us the heads up, What advice would you give to other people in derby about new product coming out this year?:
The biggest thing coming out this year is Heartless wheels. These wheels are made by Mo Sanders AKA Quadzilla formally from Atom wheels. These wheels are the sickest wheels I have ever skated on. I have always been against narrow hubbed wheel but when I tried these I was still able to get all the push I needed along with being able to be more agile on the track. I also hear that Vanilla has an new derby line coming out which is supposed to be pretty sick. Riedell always has and always will have the best derby boots in the market, so we can always look forward for them to come out with new innovating products.

What is the biggest pain about men's derby?
The biggest pain about men's derby is a lot of leagues like to pull a lot of hockey skaters that do not know how to play derby and just want to push and kill people, not play derby.

Future plans for RGS and yourself in derby:
The biggest plans for RollerGirlSkates in the future is to let the derby world know that RGS is here to help them and all their derby needs. The biggest plans for Short bus in the future is to let everyone know that Dallas Deception is out there and any team that’s want to play us can BRING IT!!!!

Dallas Deception VS Tucson Dry Heat Militia

so, this is my first post and just wanted to do a recap of the Dallas Deception Men's Derby game against the Tucscon Dry Heat Militia.
going into this bout our team(dallas) had a win over a combo of Arkansas/Minnesota guys last month when we played them in Arkansas with a win by 30 points. also the Tuscon guys had never played a bout so we'd be popping their derby cherry so to speak.
game started off like normal, super fast out of the gate, and to a screaching hault as soon as i reached the pack on the first jam.
after the dust settled we found our groove and started to pull away from the Tuscon guys and never looked back. first period ending with a staggering 81-10 score.
the only hiccup in our whole game was the addition of 3 HARM City Homicide players( Justice Feelgood Marshall, Sin Diesel, and Gearhead) Justice and Sin Diesel held a very good wall up front for the majority of the second half, but we were still able to continue with the points, ending the game 178-19.
highlight of the game, had to be when a member of Tuscon knocked over the water cooler and spilled a giant 10 gallon jug of ice/water all over the track mid jam! a few skaters skated around and two skated through! it was a site i had never witnessed in derby, but was interesting at how quickly it was cleaned up!

so, all in all, Dallas Deception's win streak, if you can call it that now, creeps to 2-0 for the 2009 season, and an overall league record of 5-1, not including the loss to the all-star men's team( Manifest Destiny).

Am I Nervous?

So our bout against LADD is on Saturday. I've been having my typical anxiety dreams about parasites and vermin. The weird thing is that I usually only get those before or during a stressful work-orientated thing.

I have some butterflies about this game - I'm not sure if it's just because it's the first game of the season or if the LADD name is swishing around in my head - They are kinda a big deal. SCRG All-Stars are been spending time really picking the game of derby apart. I feel more confident in our knowledge of strategic game play this season - We're playing smarter, not just hitting harder this year.

We also have the benefit of strong team unity and instinct - We have been playing together for a year now and know each others every move on the track.

I feel like my physical game is strong right now but my mind is just starting to grasp I have a game in four days - Last year I spent a lot of time visualizing (a LOT of time). This week has already been nuts with pre-bout production - I gotta take some time out and start getting myself into rock star mode.

Repeat after me: I am a machine. I am a super hero. I rock and they know it.

I just need to say that about 800 more times before Saturday.

The economy also has me a little worried - I'm hoping the SC local community still has the funds to come out and support us. Unemployment is up to 12% in SC County - YIKES.

That's all I got for now . . .

xoxo
