Beast of the East!!!!!!!!!!
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Contact: Alyssa Kwasny President, MTLRD (514)651-4487 Montreal Roller Derby Unleashes the Beast of the East Montreal, QC - Montreal Roller Derby (MTLRD) is excited to launch their second season with the unleashing of the Beast of the East on April 19th, 2008. The Beast of the East is a day long, single-elimination tournament, and the first ever Eastern Canadian Roller Derby tournament with 16 teams from Canada and the United States. This tournament was created with hopes of strengthening the sport of roller derby in the region, showcasing the skills of upcoming roller derby talent, and to see whom will reign as the 2008 Beast of the East. MTLRD, a women's amateur flat-track roller derby league, was established in 2006 and has since grown to a league with over fifty women, three teams, and one traveling team. MTLRD strives to promote and foster the sport of roller derby, and help it evolve throughout the current roller derby explosion of leagues all around the world. A favourite in the local and national media, these ladies are ready to start off their second season with a bang. Of course, being the DIY and aggressive ladies that they are, the second season will be even bigger and better, with faster skating, stronger whips, harder hits, and bigger crashes. MTLRD and the Montreal Underground Film Festival (MUFF) will kick of the Beast with a screening of the film "Hell on Wheels" Friday, April 18th at Les Saints on 30 Rue Sainte Catherine Ouest, 10pm. Salt Lake City Weekly raves that, "Hell on Wheels is a killer documentary about the Austin all-women's roller-derby leagues that inadvertently launched a worldwide revival of the sport." The film had its world premier in 2007 at South by Southwest with the second largest audience at the festival, and since has screened upwards of twenty film festivals with packed audiences every time. MTLRD and MUFF are thrilled to be presenting such an inspiring film to a new audience. The Beast of the East roller derby action will go from 10 am to 10 pm on Saturday April 19th at Arena St Louis, 5633 Rue Saint Dominique. This will be the event of the season, a roller derby milestone, and one heck of a good time. For more information about the Beast of the East, Montreal Roller Derby, or the sport of roller derby, please visit http://www.mtlrollerderby.com/. Don't forget to check out one of MTLRD's legendary after-parties following the games Saturday night at Bar Syndrome, 5777 Boul. St Laurent. See you on the track!

Death on Skates
MESQUITE , TX . (March 13, 2008) - It's Time to Bring Conspiracy Back to the Track! Trigger Mortis has alerted me that ACRD is starting their 2008 season on March 29, the same day MTL Roller Derby kicks of their season with their travel team, The New Skidz on the Block, taking on the Dutchland Rollers in Lancaster, PA. ACRD says: The spunky skaters of Assassination City Roller Derby will roll out their first bout of 2008 with the season opener on Saturday, March 29. The girls will host their neighbors to the north, the Victory Dolls of Oklahoma, in the first game of the night, aptly named "Victory or Death." In this competition, which kicks off at 7 p.m., seasoned skaters of both leagues’ interleague travel teams will duke it out. The second game of the night, "Battle to the Death," will feature skaters from Assassination City , the Oklahoma Victory Dolls and two Texas leagues, Piney Woods Roller Derby and the East Texas Bombers. The event promises all the wickedness on wheels you remember from last year, complete with beatings, bloody noses, beer-can pyramids and bands. It also brings a lineup of new faces – check out rising stars Mona Bruiser and Olive Illegal – as well as a new season schedule and a new venue. Assassination City events will be held every third Saturday night through September at Dad’s Broadway Skateland, 3022 Moon Dr., in Mesquite. Find a complete schedule online at http://www.acderby.com. Events are BYOB, no glass. Tickets for each bout are $12 in advance or $15 at the door. Kids under 10 get in free. Buy tickets in advance from the league’s web site or at the following locations: CD World, Dad’s Broadway Skateland, Doublewide Bar, Pluckers, Absinthe Lounge, and Skatebus Skateshop. And don't forget our Day of the Dead themed prebout party March 22 at the Doublewide Bar, 3510 Commerce in Dallas, and our killer after-bout parties are always held at Lee Harvey's, 1807 Gould in Dallas, where you can hang with all the derby girls! Women's Roller derby, the nation’s fastest-growing sport, combines speed, action, aggression and feminine grace. Assassination City went from a dream to a Dallas destination in 2005. The member-owned league is part of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association. Thanks, Trigger! It is nice to know Roller derby is gearing up and rolling for another year. MTLRD will be hosting the Beast of the East Tournament, the First Eastern Canadian Roller Derby Tournament with 16 teams from across eastern Canada and the US, and we're all in a flurry of roller derby right now. I hope I can make it to Rollercon this year to meet everyone! Labels: ACRD, bouts, MTLRD, roller derby

What's wet, red, black and white, and makes people cheer?
The answer: A 6 foot paper mache rollerskate on the back of a truck with a MTL Roller Derby color scheme and a little snow falling on it. Optional correct answer, Georgia W Tush in red lame pants and black undies that say TUSH in white that is skating like the roller derby hero she is along with a bunch of our other roller girls in Montreal's 184th St Patrick's Day parade. never fear, pictures will follow soon! ;) Labels: MTLRD

Montreal Roller Derby attacks Boston Derby Dames' mascot
Last week I attended a Boston Derby Dames bout featuring Maine Roller Derby's Portland Authorities, and Gotham Girl's Bronx Gridlock. It was a double header with double the Dames. Part of the Boston Massacre played the Maine ladies for a 30 minute bout, and then the Boston Massacre took on Bronx Gridlock. And wow, have those BDD's really improved since the first and only time I saw one of their intra-league bouts in '06. During the first game the feisty Port Authorities started off strong and took the Boston ladies in the beginning jams. Shortly after Boston caught on and gave the PA's an ass whooping. Although I'd say it was a respectable ass whoopin', and considering MRD is not as experienced as BDD's they were amazing! I was really impressed with their team..and it just so happens that my team will be playing them in September. I managed to take a few mental notes for future reference. Unfortunately, my mental notes were soon forgotten after many plastic cups of crummy Bud Light. The final score was 81-31 for the Dames. Props to MRD for playing hard, and props to BDD for being rad! I was convinced that the Massacre would be exhausted after playing hard for 30 mins already. Apparently I was wrong, because the Dames were as strong as ever for the following two periods. From the beginning, BM had a strong lead over Bronx Gridlock (might I add, one of my favourite team themes in all of roller derby!). Both teams are mighty strong, but BM managed to keep up with the blocks, hits, and amazing jams throughout the whole game. The end result was 116-49 for Boston. Definitely an exciting sixty minutes of roller derby. Now to get to the most important issue here. MTLRD loved pinchy the BDD crab. We're not sure if that's even his name, but it will be anyway for the time being. The next sequence of events will be explained through photos. MTLRD spots their prey: MTLRD sneak up and attack their victim. Note the look of fear in his eyes. MTLRD threaten the poor lobsters life with his own weapon: Instead of going through with the plotted kidnapping, MTLRD settles for a group shot. All was well again! I found the missing blog.... Boy, am I ever exhausted! I just got back from San Diego on Monday, and I am still trying to get back to my normal self. Derby overload! Derby overload!!! Alright, so it all started Tuesday, Feb 19th on Jess Bandit, Ashley Thudd, and my trek to California, while sadly leaving a snowstorm behind. hah! We travelled the whole day an eventually reached San Diego that night. We were greeted by ACDG's Diesel and Estro Jen, where they were nice enough to drive us all the way to Long Beach to crash at Estro's place. Thanks again ladies, you're great! Wednesday involved some touristy goodness involving Jess Bandit and myself checking out the wax museum, Chuck Norris' star, and getting stranded in Beverly Hills. I even managed to spill some Vitamin Water on some dude's fancy shoes in BV, and thank goodness he was a good sport about it. Luckily, Diesel and Estro came to our rescue and brought the getaway vehicle outta BH, heading to their practice. ACDG let us tag along at their practice. I enjoyed how the importance or reason why we were doing the exercise was explained to us throughout their practice. That is always important, and should be done all of them time. The gals were great, and the night ended with the art of drinking PBR's at a cute little bar in LA. Thanks ladies! So for a good time, call ACDG. SAN DIEGO!! After an early evening of drinking a beer or two, we still had to trek over to San Diego bright an early for the Blood and Thunder Training Camp at the San Diego Derby Dolls' Dollhouse. But that's what derby stamina is all about my friends. First, I'd like to acknowledge what a great space SDDD has found. They have room for a stretching space, banked track, flat track, and office space. So jealous! I am too lazy to go into detail about all of the workshop details, but I certainly learned a lot from trainers like AZRD's Coach Pauly, Tampa's Shirley Insane, SDDD's Bonnie D.Stroir, TXRD's Cherry Chainsaw, LADD's Tara Armov, B&T's Black Dahlia, Renegade's Mayhemily, and SDDD's Bully Julie. The first day I overdid myself, and did amost every workshop from 10am to 10pm, including B&T allstar team tryouts at night. By early evening I was exhausted, and if my feet could talk, they'd be screaming bloody murder. I forgot about the fact that I was still breaking in my new skaters, so my feet were blister-tastic. Putting my health aside, attending all of the workshops was such a great learning experience, and helped me realize that there is still SO much I need to learn in a sport that is constantly changing and evolving. ..And there were still three more days! Thursday night ended with allstar team tryouts, when everyone was exhausted from a long-filled derby day. The skaters came from rookie backgrounds, to some of the most experienced gals around. It was fun to skate with everybody, and see all of the different levels working together. Chosen by Coach Pauly, the Allstar team was: Miss Fortune Georgia W. Tush Miss Mel Mangles Demanda Riot Miss E Vil Muffin Viagra Falls Goodie Two Skates So Sue Mi Crazy Train Ivanna Spankin Trish the Dish Switchblade Siouxie Killbox Jane Ire Juju Estro Jen, Diesel, Lulu Cthulu, and Chrissy Cruiser were also chosen to play on the SDDD team. Ya! I made the team! It was exciting to be on a team with so much talent, experience, and such great ladies. Although at this point, not only did I realize that I had to participate in all of the workshops and bring back the information to my league. But also, focus and prepare to play a bout the Saturday night. Ahhh! The next day, I was done. Everything was sore, and I was exhausted. I took the day much easier by participating in fewer workshops, and trying to re-cap everything I had learned the day before. One of the only camp issues also began Friday (maybe the day before as well, I just didn't notice), was that some workshops were getting canceled, or changed. However, I think B&T did a great job replacing workshops, and filling up the gaps. That night, I had an all-star practice and it was a lot of fun preparing a team to play against a team that works well together, and that has been playing together for a long time. One point that was really stressed, was the fact that a good derby player should be able to play with anyone at anytime. So very true! Saturday was a write off for me. At this point during the camp, I was so tired and I don't think my brain could take anymore workshop info. I mostly chilled, and prepared for the big game. The classes shrunk a lot by the end of the day, and most people were resting or heading over to the game. [I just found this blog..and I'm going to end it short and sweet, because I'm lazy] I was nervous, because I didn't want to feel like the dud of the team. I also hadn't been in a bout in front of so many people since last summer! My body felt like crud, but we did a warm up with Mayhemily that made me feel like a million bucks. San Diego's Hard Corps and Diego Rollers started off the double head with DR coming out victorious after a close game. You want to know what is amazing? Having the most stacked team EVER! That my friends, is amazing. The bout began, and the San Diego Allstars started off with a strong fight. Team Blood and Thunder did win the game, but SD did certainly not make it easy for the BT's. I can't remember the final score, i feel like it was 80 somethin to 130ish? The next day, my gals and I had to leave early because of a crummy flight change. We got to the airport, and our flight was overbooked by 16 people. What the shit? How does that even happen? Nonetheless, being the opportunist that I am, I went to go find out what kind of deals they were offering. Jess Bandit and I agreed to fly out the next morning and in return we received a free round trip plane ticket, that night's hotel and meals paid for, and FIRST CLASS seats the next morning. A let me tell you, once you fly first class, it is hard to go back. They offered us drinks before we even lifted, omelettes with fruit and croissants, and a hot towel. We were stuck in Burlington overnight waiting for the bus back to Montreal, but it was all for the greater good. In the end, B&T was a blast. The first year is always a trial and error run, but overall I took home some much from the trainers and other skaters. It was nice to have so much information in a small environment and small numbers in the classes, compared to all the vices and distractions in Fabulous Las Vegas. I would highly recommend the Blood and Thunder Training camp if they decide to run it next year. Props go out to Blood and Thunder and the San Diego Derby Dolls for organizing and hosting such a great event! Next stop, Las Vegas! annoying and awesome stuff
I wrote a big long post about my trip to the Blood and Thunder Training camp in San diego, but it apparently dissapeared. I`m way too lazy to write a new one, so if I don`t find it you`re outta luck. On a brighter note, how geeky am I? I have already reserved my room at the Imperial for Rollercon. I couldn`t resist because if you reserve now, you can get rooms for $49 bones. For a derby gal on a very very tight budget (aka lack of job beginning april 1), it`s a good deal. To add more to my geekiness and lack of avoiding a million prjoects at once, I am going to try and start up a league in my hometown of Thunder Bay, Ontario when I go at the end of the month. I am going to hold a roller derby basics and info session to try and recruit some ladies to build a league there. Am I a nerd? Yes. Have I accepted it? Sure. I hope that people will show up and take an interest into creating a league. It is stressful, at times make you feel a lil crazy, but in the end, soooooo worth it. Whip It! Update and a How To Paper mache
Ellen Page will star in Whip It! too! And it's noted she has to undergo some serious physical training for her role in this, and a horror movie. She'll play a roller derby queen it says. I say find some real rollergirls, please! I love Ellen page and Drew Barrymore and all that, but rollergirls are awesome! Read MoreOh, and what has coat hangers, chicken wire and today's news? A 5 foot paper mache roller skate! MTLRDL's Creative Committee is madly trying to finish off some truck decorations for Montreal's St. Patricks Day parade event in a couple weeks, and we ended up with a bigger production than we thought. Do you have any idea how to make 13 in- 14 in diameter wheels that will support a 5 foot by 5 foot paper mache skate? Hmmm we're on it an you will see the results when it's done.... PS - Derby Luv is going to remain as bland as I have been lately, because my digital camera broke a couple months ago. (The on/off button no longer turns it on or off). I am totally at a loss for pictures and video now. IF you can shop at the derby luv skate shop, are willing to donate to Derby Luv, or have an old digital camera you are getting rid of to get me through until I can buy another, please let me know. Later! Labels: Derby Luv, MTLRD, whip it
