Assassination City Roller Derby 2008 Calendar
So my friend, Trigger Mortis, from Assassination City Roller Derby was my first contact when I heard a few weeks ago about their new Calendar coming out. I wish my league had been able to pull this off this year, but alas, I will love vicariously through my roller derby friends from afar. Trigger says: The theme of the calendar is basically "the businesses and events that make Dallas cool, and how Assassination City fits into the mix with making Dallas the place to be. Each of the businesses will be selling the calendars for us, also, because it benefits them, too, to have their name out there!
The ACRD girls (you can meet some of them in the Rollergirls section of Derbyluv.com) meant the calendar to show how roller derby is one of the great, cool things to do in Dallas, along with the other stuff going down in the south. I have to say, I've been to Dallas and Fort Worth and I loved it there. I hope I get to go back and I will definitely be hanging with ACRD! Congrats, ACRD! I hope they sell like hotcakes! If you're in Dallas check out ACRD for info on the signing party Dec 7th!

There and back again, a Rollergirl's Tale...
Wow! Thanksgiving with the family, shopping and Roller Derby.. what a non-restful, but totally awesome Thanksgiving vacation to North Carolina! I've got some images and video to share, but I can give you a brief synopsis of my practice with the Blue Ridge Rollergirls.... Let's just say that their brawny Coach, Mike, and their Blue Ridge Mountain Bruiser (that's what I am calling them) girls were awesome! As friendly as can be, but as tough and fast on their shiny glass-polished cement floor as you can imagine. Those pyramid rest period scissor kicks and banana peels, those suicides that went on forever... and that drag line.... AWESOME! The Blue Ridge Rollergirls say they have finished their first season as well, and it could have been better. It seems even my home state that still has roller rinks around, places to play are still hard to find. They ended up at a community center, couldn't sell beer, and were not allowed to book enough in advance to promote their games more than a couple weeks in advance. Come On - support your local roller derby if you're in Western NC and get out to Asheville to see them next time around! That sucks! My dream is for every league to have their own home space where we can all practice as much as we can in dry and warm places, and we can all have our events and games in the same space... how awesome would that be? So on the plane I go in an hour, with my sore stomach muscles, sore back and in shape and tight legs... Roller Derby Hurts, but I LOVE ROLLER DERBY! Thnks to Chell-O Shooter, Coach Mike, Give Em Hella, Axe, Ace, and all the girls I may have forgotten the names to write down at BRRG for having me out to practice. If you ever wanna visit Montreal, just let me know! Labels: roller derby, training, Travel

TORD Championship results and Nia is going on the road
So Trash N Smash and Georgia W Tush along with Bon-Bon Scott of MTLRD were at the TORD Championship bout in Toronto this past weekend. Aside from the most important tale of a small, quiet Bon-Bon being a surprising tough-ass trooper with a massive hangover on the ride home - (and at Sunday practice!)... the tales told were of a bad start for the Chicks Ahoy, and then a better second two periods when they rallied to try and come back... but alas, Gore Gore ran away with this one and celebrate being the 2007 Champions of TORD. Congrats to Gore Gore! If you are an MTLRD fan, you'll remember in February 2007, Les Contrabanditas played their first at home bout against Gore Gore in exhibition play with a nail-biter of a close game that ended with the 'Ditas winning 91-89, and there is a rumour of a possible rematch coming this season There's some awesome photos posted on the TORD Championship game... In other, closer to my heart news, I'm headed on the road (or should I say I'm leaving on a jet plane?) tomorrow morning to head to North Carolina, my hometown, and a full schedule. No worries, Derby Luvvers, I'm sure Georgia will be posting, and I promise you tales from the airports and lots of updates on the way home after skating with the BRRG!. This weekend and Planning for US Thanksgiving Weekend!
I can't believe US Thanksgiving is just a week away - less than that actually... I'll be heading south for the event, but I'll go into that in a bit. First off, just let me say that Roller Derby seasons everywhere winding down, while others, like MTLRD have just recruited, are recruiting, and are in training for the start of next season. In the next two weeks, we have 3 championships, and that's just what I have in my inboxes on Facebook and Myspace on a quick scan. I don't catch all of them, and I feel terrible about that... Here goes: Saturday Nov 17th (that's tomorrow) TORD has a Championship game with the Gore Gore Rollergirls against the Chicks Ahoy. I think my teammate Trash 'N Smash and friends will be there - that means maybe Georgia W Tush if I know my captain and co-captain. Those carless of us are stuck with waiting to hear the scoop... If you're in or near TO or can get there... go see the TORD girls kick ass! It's at RINX at 65 Orfus Road in Toronto. Oh and check out the Roller Suicide fundraiser for TORD at Fable House in Toronto on Sunday. If you are already south of the US/Canada Border, you can also catch an eciting championship bout between the Queens of Pain and the Bronx Gridlock for the Gotham Girls Roller Derby on the same night. Next weekend, after stuffing yourself on Turkey on Thursday and shopping derby-style on Black Friday, you can catch The Holy Rolling Empire event with the Arch Rival Rollergirls M-80s and the Smashinistas fighting for the 2007 ARRG Championship Cup! That's on the 24th at the All-American Sports Mall in St Louis, MO. And there's some events I am too late to post, sorry everyone!, and more to post for early December. But for now, I'll let you know that on Wednesday, Nov 21, Nia Capps with gear in her suitcase will be headed from Montreal to North Carolina. And, The BlueRidge Rollergirls of Asheville, NC (really close to my hometown and where I will be) have been nice enough to have me at their Thanksgiving weekend practice on Saturday morning. Thanks, Shoot Her! I'll see how many BRRG girls I can introduce you to, and what info I can bring back... hopefully blogging in the airports and during my visit some too... In the meantime, I am nursing an injury from Tuesday's league practice and not doing a good job of it. RICE, NIA, RICE... I took a fall onto my left hip.. and continued skating and thought nothing of it. 3 full days later and tough no hematoma big blue bloody looking bruise is forming, my hip is still swollen up in a lump, achy, and it hurts to put all my weight onmy left leg at an angle out from my body, or to go up stairs with it. I think I know how old people break their hips now... gravity + slipping + falling hard = OW! But hey, it's all in a derby day's work, right?! I hope Santa brings me some new wheels for Christmas that are grippier and more stable on our wood practice floors. I think wearing my Blue Demons for miles and miles of asphalt all spring and summer have made them still good for outside, but maybe not too grippy anymore on wood... Don't forget, you can help out Derby Luv continue and grow by shopping our merch store or visiting our skate shop! And watch for a fresh meat blogger to be added to Derby Luv soon! Roller Derby - Insult sent to Derby Luv Myspace by those to get no press because I refuse to name them
On Oct 25th, I received the below hate mail on my myspace - I just got it. The person that did this has no presence on myspace or anywhere else so far, but I wanted to share it in case they have spammed you too, and let you know my thoughts. "Dearest Derby Luv - I'd like you to take a moment and just realize how ridiculous and anti-feminist roller derby is for the modern female. If roller derby is primarily about playing with sexual norms and doing some kind of Suicide Girls type performance with a little bit of violence added in for spice, then we should stop pretending it's feminist and empowering...and let us not forget the about cankle ratio per roller girl. "
Anyone that can believe this has never been through a grueling 3 hour derby practice training, pushed themselves to meet minimum skill requirements as a rookie, or nursed the bruises and injuries we've all gotten from our sport. They don't know the hours we put in to learn how to play, to improve our play, and the dedication it takes to keep skating and training with bleeding sores from skates, and blisters and shin splints. Don't forget the sprained shoulders, hematomas, knee injuries, broken bones, dislocated ankles, busted faces... the times when you play a game on 10 or less players and skate every 2 minute jam for a period... And frankly, it is feministic and empowering too... becoming an athlete, getting in shape, knowing I can take hits and give them... being sure of myself, and also becoming comfortable enough in my skin to wear a short skirt and fishnets in public? Roller Derby is the best thing to happen to me, and I know there wouldn't be so many leagues operating, and so many fans if it weren't true for others. I'm ashamed I wasted time to even respond. Wild Rose Challenge Cup in Edmonton, Alberta
So I heard recently about the Edmonton, Alberta E-Ville Roller Derby league hosting a Wild Rose Challenge Cup event. The details are below: From E-Ville skater Beretta Lynch: Edmonton, Alberta A Roller Derby First in Alberta: The 2007 Wild Rose Challenge Cup
Roller derby’s all-female independent comeback in Alberta now has a milestone with the inaugural 2007 Wild Rose Challenge Cup, according to E-Ville’s ‘Beretta Lynch.’ Roller derby has taken on a new meaning in women’s sport by making it a grass-roots, community-wise athletic sports initiative. “Competition has been fierce for our exhibition season,” said ‘Lynch,’ “but the Wild Rose Challenge Cup promises to be more brutal, beautiful and bewitching than any other sport you’ve ever seen!”
The 2007 Wild Rose Challenge Cup pits Edmonton against Calgary for the first ever challenge cup in Alberta roller derby. The teams have been training for up to two years, and this cup gives them the chance to show off their hard work in the inaugural challenge. Both leagues are independent, non-profit, all-female and self-organized. Members are dedicated athletes determined to win using legs of steel in a gritted-teeth rivalry between the two cities. From the events, supplied by Chasey Maim: "...be there to witness the E-Ville Roller Derby challenge the Calgary Roller Derby Association in the first ever Wild Rose Challenge Cup game. Advance tickets now available from your favorite derby girls and at Urge II Tattoodios, 9654 Jasper Avenue. and at Happy Harbor Comics, 10112 - 124 Street. Get to know your skates!
I just spent a weekend with Wile E. Peyote from Rat City Rollergirls, and FastgirlSkates.com . That gal can sure eat! But more importantly, she knows a lot about skates, and I drilled her with questions all weekend long. There is so much to know about skates, and I feel like I only got to the tip of the iceberg. Some things to keep in mind when purchasing new gear: -just because everyone else is going with a certain boot, wheel, or plate, doesn't mean it's going to work for you! -you can find different widths in skates. narrow, wide, and narrow heal with wide toe. -jammers are beginning to try out wheels that are not as wide for more maneuverability -if you're a bigger skater, aluminum hubs are beneficial, because they don't flex as much as nylon hubs..thus, making you work harder. and who the heck wants to do extra work? -aluminum plates are a bit heavier, and the cheaper ones may be too heavy for some skaters. i.e. ME -when starting out, try not getting all the fancy schmancy gear at first. ok, so maybe some hard work is alright sometimes. once you get used to some cheaper wheels, medi-ocre bearings, beginner skates, then i think you will appreciate the upgrade as a more experienced skate. for example, the extra roll-out time on bearings, or pusher wheels! -ask questions! get different opinions, talk to other skaters, and try out different gear for yourself! i am still on my quest for my perfect skate. good luck to you! and remember, i'm not a skate saleslady, so find out for yourself about this information. someone else could tell you something completely different. love, georgia w tushy Labels: roller skates, wheels

Derby weekends are fun
Oh boy, so much to write, but so very, very, very lazy! So two weeks ago, I had the chance to make it down to the fabulous town of Mount Laurel, New Jersey. I personally recommend the dollar store that is going out of business near the rink, and the restaurant Friendly's with their outrageous portions of salad dressing for a side salad. The REAL reason I was in the big ML however, was to check out the Penn Jersey She Devil's vs our gals the Hammer City Rollergirls for the Roller Derby Hall of Fame weekend on Oct 27th. HCRG were playing OSDA rules for their first time. After many squeaky butt cheeks on that newly polished floor, the PJ's came out on top with a score of 85 to 57. HCRG's Dangermouse even sacrificed a healthy leg for her girls, but unfortunately it was not enough. Send her your love, and maybe an unbroken leg! That was the first time I have ever seen an OSDA bout, and it was quite the experience! It took me a while to finally catch on due to my lack of being able to follow instructions, pay attention, and read clear explanations in the program. Although once I figured it out, it was a very exciting game! One rule that I found interesting was how the lead jammer could change numerous times throughout the jam, and if the second jammer was stuck at the back of the pack their pivot could instantly take over as jammer. That keeps a pivot on her toes! One rule that I wasn't a fan of was that if a jammer went out of bounds while she was going through the pack, she;s have to go to the back of the pack. That rule would literally KILL me as a jammer, I think I'd be banned to the back. Plus, I found that there were too many elbows for my liking. Maybe I'm a wuss? It was also cool to see some of the former Old School players getting inducted into the Hall of Fame. I was disappointed with the turn out of the night. Perhaps there were more people at the other events that weekend, but I found attendance quite low at the bout. Especially since there's a high concentration of derby leagues in that area, it was an international bout, and it was H.O.F. weekend. C'man people, where is the "Derby Luv"? Hahaha...ok I'm not funny. Anyway, the Penn Jersey gals were great, and the after party was a blast. Karaoke, weird old men asking if we there were a lot of lesbians, and me getting kicked out of the bar for an attempt at stealing an inflatable parrot off the wall with Tequila Sunrise. Bastards. NEXT DAY: Oct 28 Trip to Hyde Park, New York, to play the Hudson Valley Horrors. Best part of the whole trip? The fact that the inside the RollerMagic Roller Rink matched the New Skids (MTLRD allstar) team's neon uniforms. Hell yes! The bout was tons o' fun, and it was a great game. Considering we're two leagues that are quite new to the derby scene, there were a lot of hard hits, fast skaters, and effective blocking. Guest skater Captain Morgan from the Long Island Roller Rebels knocked me on my ass numerous times. Perhaps a few too many! But don't worry, she'll get hers..by playing two more bouts each week following that game! haha sucker The final score was 89:HVH 116:MTLRD (i think!). Hudson Valley was awesome, thanks ladies! And a tidbit of information, Hyde Park, NY, is the home of FDR. He had a very large house, and I saw it! Some shout outs go to... Hudson Valley Horrors Hammer City Roller Girls Penn Jersey She Devils Mr. Rawk (Head Ref from Gotham Girls and temp announcer on OCT 28) Long Island Roller Girls Pioneer Valley RG's for comin' to the game! Peace! Georgia W Tush Labels: MTLRD, osda

Montreal Photographer exhibits Roller Derby
A local Montreal Photographer has made her latest exhibit all about Roller Derby. The subjects: MTL Roller Derby girls, as well as Lehigh Valley girls from our All-Star game of 2007. The enlarged best photos in frames, are available from the exhibit at Blizzarts at 3956A St-Laurent in Montreal... but be prepared to pay for K-Dawgs' face planting, legs-up fall, Jess Bandit's cutoff shorts, or Boxcar Bethy's face to be hung on your living room wall. The book of the entire collection of full-color photographic masterpieces? Only $50. Susan has captured everything from the anxiousness of a team waiting to play, to the tiredness and anger in a game, to the party and celebration of an excited crowd. She even caught some falls that can make you cringe. Not to forget the fishnets, and crotch shots. The Montreal Gazette said: Her latest exhibit, Roller Derby, captures the grit and beauty of the sport she describes as "burlesque on wheels." Moss has created a crazy, sexy kaleidoscope of pink laces, neon green fishnets, blue mouth guards, red lipstick and purple rollerskates.
"It's all about strong, independent, tough, hot chicks," Moss says.
I was at the vernissage with other MLTRD girls, including Georgia W Tush last night, and I have to tell you, the photos are awesome! And being devoted to roller derby? Well that wins my heart right there. Your very own Nia Capps did not play in the games that were shot and usually shies away from the camera so you won't find her there, but Miss Georgia W Tush shows up for sure... Thanks to Susan for the book, and to Blizzarts for hosting the exhibit for the month. You can find Susan Moss Photography at http://www.susanmossphotography.com/index.html She does great work, and she likes Roller Derby! Labels: media, roller derby art
