Doors Open for OSDA
This past weekend on Saturday October 27, OSDA League the Penn Jersey She Devils (representing the USA) took on the ladies from Hammer City (representing Canada) in a game skated under OSDA rules. It was a tough game with a lot of excellent skating but when all was said and done, the She Devils took it 85 to 57. Both teams joined each other for a victory lap around the track with their flags held high. This event was held in conjunction with the 2007 Roller Derby Hall of Fame Induction Event & many Old School Banked Track Skaters were in attendence including stars such as Buddy Atkinson, Judy Arnold & Little Richard Brown. For many, this was their first Flat Track Game and the reaction was very favorable to the OSDA style. The following night, the Hall of Fame held their induction dinner making 6 more skaters members of the Hall of Fame. The She Devils were in attendence along with representatives from other OSDA teams like Corpus Christi Rolling Thunder & the South Jersey Derby Girls. The She Devils were chosen to model uniforms from Roller Derby's past and did a fashion show during the event. After the induction ceremonies, the She Devils were surprised by the Hall of Fame with a Special Merit Award for keeping the spirit of Old School Derby alive. One of the highlights of the evening was seeing Buddy Atkinson, former coach of the incredible Eastern Warriors, running an unplanned training session with the OSDA skaters in the hallway outside the banquet room. One could feel the love & respect that these two generations of skaters had for each other. From the many offers of coaching & training assistance offered to the OSDA by these banked track legends, I think we can safely say that doors that had long been closed were opened to the OSDA that night. Ottawa Roller Derby visits MTLRD
So our usual Sunday practices were cancelled yesterday as we had our next to last Boot Camp for MTLRD for newbies and recruitment in the morning, and then the Ottawa Roller Derby girls came out and for "practice" we did some mini-scrimmages. MTLRD ALL-Stars are hard into practice for the game on Oct 28th The Frankenskate! Hey, those Ottawa girls got a good dose of what they need to do with the All-Stars and award winning jammers, Georgia W Tush, Iron Wrench and Cat Attack burning up the track... what a great training experience! And it helps remind you how far you've come to help out and cheer on a new team that's starting out. Thanks, Ottawa! You're own your way and looking good! Thanks for the practice! And note to self: Remember for the Christmas list - an old bike tire to make new toe protectors out of (cause it just looks cooler and it's cheaper than buying new ones every few months) , some new wheels - my Blue Demons for games on concrete and outdoors - but I need something for wood floors. If you win the lottery of find a long lost unknown rich relatives inheritances, some Riedell 265s would be good because the 1000s are a bit tight on my toes! And a Derby Luv T-Shirt and some gifts for friends! - geez get with it, Nia! haha later everyone! Labels: merchandise, MTLRD, training

Derby La Vida Loca
Hey derby luvvers! I lost my glasses a few weeks ago so extra hours on a computer have been a little tough lately, but I'm replacing them this week, so I should be able to get back into the swing of things. In the news: Check Georgia W Tush's post about the MTL All Stars team playing down in NY at the end of the month. A roller derby girl and female football player was on "Deal or No Deal" last night. I am hunting for her name and contact info. And Ken Sikes, Founder of the OSDA has been invited formally to blog with Derby Luv about OSDA news. I hope to see him join us soon, and that you enjoy an old-school view of roller derby! Have a great derby day! Labels: media, MTLRD, osda

Happy Thanksgiving to my Canadian Rollergirls!
It's Canadian Thanksgiving, so Happy Thanksgiving to all the Canadian Rollergirls, their derby widows and widowers, rollergirls and ref in training kiddies, and entire families! As a transplanted American, I have to say that I celebrate both holidays, and for both, I like to find things to be thankful for. Today I am thankful that I know Georgia W Tush. She has been a roller derby inspiration to me, and so much help to Derby Luv. I'm thankful that I have a wonderful derby widow by my side. That I skated all summer and think I can do better this season for MTLRD. I'm thankful derby is alive and kicking in Canada, and look forward to year 2 with hopes that I'll make some new derby friends, some new derby enemies, and that I can get in the penalty chair at least once, but only if my team has already lost and I don't hurt our score. ;) Oh and don't forget, Derby Luv wants to be at RollerCon 2008. We'd like to have a Canadian Roller derby All-Stars team to go play... so if you're a Canadian Rollergirl and want to be a member, get in touch with me or Georgia and we'll work on it for next year! 2007 WFTDA National Championships took place over the weekend in Austin, Texas and the Kansas City Roller Warriors surprised us all by defeating Seattle's Rat City Rollergirl's and taking 1st place. Congrats to those ladies, and all of skaters that took part in this event. For more info check out http://www.leadjammer.com/, and where you can check out some play by plays of the bouts. Leadjammer.com was posting live during each game to give all of us back home some live roller derby action. So, check out the site! I am also stealing some info for next year off the site: "The intro page of the Texas Shootout program had this little tidbit hiding in the fine print: 2008 WFTDA Tournaments, AUTUMN 2008 Western Regionals - Houston, TX - Oct. 3-5 Eastern Regionals - Madison, WI - Oct. 10-12 2008 Championships - Portland, OR - Nov. 14-16" See ya there? breaking up with your first season 101
A new season of MTLRD has begun, and I can smell the sweetness of victory ahead! But seriously folks, we've started up again, and I've noticed a new intensity and excitement from our players, practices, and league as a whole. Life feels good once you get out of that first season. The awkward stage! Y'know, kinda like puberty. More skates and beer, but just as much crying and stress about nothing. Finding your derby name is like finding yourself. I hope I never find the papers with my potential alter ego's scribbled down. How embarrassing! I remember endlessly trying to find ways how to incorporate gore and rock and roll into one name. Clearly, that got me nowhere. In fact, I think the majority of names I came up with were names that I had already read on the roster, but then forgot, and thought I was witty. Or even your first "derby outfit" to that first event or fundraiser you have. Ugh. But now we're coming to the the dawning of a new era. An era where we now know to hire real security guards (preferably of the lesser douchebag quality), we will be able to have our season booked more than 1 month before our first bout, and have enough change in the float to get us past 15 mins of ticket sales at the door. It's just common sense people! However that common sense is always MIA when you have no idea what to do, where to start, and try to plan a whole first season at the last minute. Time for a fresh start! Dear MTLRD Season #1, We've had some good times since April 2006, but now I think it's time for me to move on. I have found a new season that is more experienced, will take me to far away places like America, and will be a heck of a lot more organized then you ever were. I'll never forget you, but it's time to start something new. Love always, Your President, Georgia W Tush **** Our league is also looking to travel and bout other leagues this season, because of our limited rink space. Damn you hockey season that seems to last almost all year long in these parts. I have my eyes on Washington DC! I need to play there, and at least before the next election or any type of impeachment. GO TO THIS! I'm not exactly sure where this place is yet, but if googlemaps doesn't fail me, everything will be a-ok. Viva Kingston/Hyde Park, New York! You girls will be blinded by our travel team's neon green uniforms. Labels: bouts, MTLRD, news
