Derbyluv Calendar question

So as you can see in the last post that listed out the plethora of roller derby events for the next 6 weeks, there are a lot of them. I just added two events, (marked with ***) and will keep doing so until I make a new calendar post.

If you have thoughts, theories, or suggestions on how you'd prefer to see the calendar of events, I'm all ears!

In the meantime, I am sad that I am not playing anymore games this season. No more Roller Derby for me (except training training and more training) until I guess... April or May 2008. Another birthday will go by, another Christmas..what a sad state of affairs....

OSDA - Membership is also open

OSDA:
"Currently membership in OSDA is open to any league (Female, Male or Co-Ed) willing to skate under the Old School rule set. For the next 6 months, there will be no fee for membership. "

Just checking out OSDA after seeing Miss Chievious' post and found this as well.

OSDA

Looking to the past to lead us to the future

The Old School Derby Association

(OSDA) was created as an alternative for those who were dissatisfied with WFTDA rules. Old School rules were created by melding many of the current developments in Flat Track Derby with the rules used by Old School Banked Track Roller Derby skaters. These rules were developed by the Penn Jersey She Devils through consultation with representatives from Derby teams from the 70s and we believe add to a more exciting game for both the fans & the players. It is the belief of the OSDA that by ignoring those that came before them, today’s leagues
are doing a great disservice to both themselves and the fans. In no other sport, has what came before been ignored. It is the intention of OSDA to restore these ties and learn from that past. To that end, the OSDA has begun the process of developing an advisory board of former Roller Derby skaters. This board will consist of some of the top skaters from the 60s & 70s glory period of Roller Derby. It is also our intention to establish contacts with the Roller Derby Hall of Fame in New York for member teams allowing them the opportunity to perhaps discuss and view films of early Derby. Another possibility in discussion is the establishment of 1 or 2 day Intensive Training Sessions with some of the Old School Derby skaters. It is our belief that there is a huge untapped market out there for Derby skated in Old School fashion. Consider the fact that Old School Derby has never really died on the West Coast as teams of these Derby Stars still entertain decent crowds as recent as this past year. We believe that it is possible to entertain a crowd with an aggressive hard skated Old School game. The field is littered with those who didn’t understand that the draw was the Game. Pure & simple. Not Alligator pits, not figure eights, not walls of death, not gimmicks - just the incredible skill of the skaters. It is the intention of the OSDA to once again show the beauty of a game that has kept Derby fans Derby fans for years. It is our hope that you will consider joining us on this journey. Come help us grow. Create the future with the help of those from our past.

And bring back Derby the way it could be, would be & should be.

Video from MTLRD's Championship Bout - June 16, 2007

Not a cool highlight reel, but a few jams were caught on video from a fan at the bout last night. If you compare to videos of MTLRD from early this year, you can really see how much of an improvement in speed, endurance and skating everyone has had. What a season for these girls! Even the girls that didn't make the all-stars team are playing hard!

Check the MTLRD Roller Contrabanditas and Les Filles du Roi showing off on youtube!

Jam 1 - Beater Pan-Tease is lead jammer - FDR wins jam

Jam 2 - No Lead Jammer - 2 minutes of hell - 'ditas win jam

Jam 3 - L'il Momma gets lead jammer status - FDR wins jam

Jam 4 - last jam of the game - Injun #09 lead jammer - FDR wins

MTLRD Champions - Les Filles du Roi

Last night's 2007 Season Championship of the MTLRD was the best game of the entire MTLRD history! The Contrabanditas played better than ever before, harder than ever before, and kept almost all Les Filles du Roi (FDR) from standing out as superstars...

FDR started well wih a 3-0 first jam, The Contrabanditas rallied back a few times during the game and were ahead twice. At the end of the first period, the score was 37-33 for FDR. early in the game, Contrabanditas' jammer, Cat Attack, had left the game after being pushed from behind and face planting into the concrete floor, hitting her mouth and busting her lip. We hope she is okay, but I'm waiting to hear about her. The score at the end of the second period was somewhere around 68-49 (to be confirmed) for FDR. The Contranbanditas rallied back a few times during the game and were ahead twice.

By the third period, penalties had started wracking up for both teams, but FDR didn't falter. My 'ditas weren't able to wrack up enough points enough to come back. L'il Homewrecker suffered a ligament injury in the third. The Contrabanditas played hard to the end, but we were beaten 98-71 making FDR the MTLRD 2007 Champions. Congrats to the FDR!

Speaking of Cat Attack's injury, I have to say, intentional, opposing blocker, two-handed shoving from behind into someone's back should be more than a minor penalty. Look in the NHL, look at the case of Bertuzzi, checking from behind can really hurt someone if it goes wrong. It's reckless and dangerous. The player that hit Cat was probably 3 times her size and weight. Had that gone wrong with Cat's face on the floor and someone that size falling atop her... well come on, I know it's roller derby, injuries are a when, not an if, blah blah, but it was just damn dangerous. Ok, soapbox is being put away now. Thanks for listening.. ;)

Derby Luv Virtual Merch Table

I am happy to say that the Derby Luv store is open for business and the new-look designs are looking pretty sharp, if I say so myself.

Aside from showing your love for roller derby and of our site here, it'll also put some coins in the tip jar to help keep this site running, keep my gear in top shape, and hopefully maybe even get my butt to Las Vegas for Rollercon next year.

Hey, a rollergirl can dream, can't she?

Uncle Leon and the Alibis

Hey derbyluvvers, if you like roller derby, surely you've heard "Roller Derby Saved My Soul", right? Well whether or not you are are familiar with Uncle Leon and the Alibis, I can tell you it's a hell of a roller derby song, the music is an awesome rock-N-roll, country, Johnny Cash style and Leon is the nicest music guy I've ever met.

Uncle Leon and the Alibis are headed out on a tour of shows around the US, including multiple Roller Derby Events, so check out the interview for details, and to get to know all you need to know about Uncle Leon.

You'll also find links galore, and some of the events, I didn't know about yet, so it's a heads up that they're comin!

Enjoy!

Rollergirl Q & A - Pyro Maim Ya - ACRD

Well folks, it's back to business after my trip to Hamilton, Ontario this weeknd for the Roll In Rage double header featuring the MTLRD Contrabanditas and Les Filles du Roi v the Hamilton Harlots and the Steel Town Tank Girls where we lost with a good clean fight, and lost a player from the 'ditas due to a broken and fractured ankle. (poor Scarlette Impailya, aka Fox, we hope she is recovering well after surgery).

The latest and last of that special 5-girl series from the ACRD is up. Pyro Maim Ya with her fiery red hair is our newest rollergirl to befriend. So check her out!

Oh, and while I was away, Hurt Reynolds of Have Derby Will Travel found the Aleve commercial featuring the Rat City Rollergirls on Youtube, and I've posted it on the latest video on the right sidebar... it's cool!

Boardwalk Brawlers of NJ are recruiting

http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=159277139: "SHORE POINTS ROLLER DERBY PRESENTS THE BOARDWALK BRAWLERS!! "

Wrap up for this week - NY, TORD, Rat City, and Derby luv to all

PoughkeepsieJournal.com - Roller derby league to debut June 17: "Roller derby league to debut June 17

The Hudson Valley Horrors will battle Western Mass Destruction in the area's first women's flat track roller derby competition June 17 at 6 p.m. at Hyde Park Roller Magic on Route 9."

Mistresses of mayhem - the Toronto Sun gives some much deserved press to the Toronto Roller Derby League, also called TORD that kicked off this month. A couple of my leaguemates were at their game. Looks like anyone that would have travelled to see us in Montreal will not be headed out as their next two games are June 16 and June 30, like ours, so check them out at the George Bell Arena if you are in the TO area!

That's the wrap up from the news on google today, I'll be on a long drive or two this weekend thinking up better ways to entertain and educate you... so come back! Oh, and did you hear about the Aleve commercial with the Rat City Rollergirls? If anyone has a way to record and post that, please come on over because I am in Canada and haven't seen it yet - little time for TV lately too...

Carolina Rollergirls

Roller derby team gaining popularity - State & National: "The Carolina Rollergirls are part of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association and are ranked sixth in the nation in roller derby, with their final regular season bout Saturday at Dorton Arena in Raleigh. "

I had to post this. I want the Carolina Rollergirls to know that I am still a Carolina girl at heart, born and raised in the NC foothills. I have cheered for them all along, and 6th place, wow! I am so proud. I know I play for Montreal, but I can only hope to someday be good enough to play with my home state girls. They are awesome!

Go, Blue, go!

Derby Luv on the road

So I am taking off tomorrow around midday to travel from Montreal, Quebec 8 hours over the 401 TransCanada Highway to Hamilton, Ontario. Also known as the Steel Town, and related by my Canadian friends that are US knowledgeable as the Pittsburgh of Canada.

The Double header ROLL IN RAGE game of MTLRD and Hammer City Roller Girls is sure to well worth the purchase price, with two games to watch. I already posted about it, but if you're around, we'll be at the Market Street Arena in Dundas ON located at 35 Market St. S. Doors open at 3 PM, game at 4 PM.

Personally thrilled that my husband has decided to come with, we'll be picking up a rental car and hitting the road together. I'll miss out on the antics of my derby girls in the vans convoying together, but it'll be a roller derby mini-vacation for me. Either way, a good time.

What does this have to do with Derby Luv? Well, I hope to meet some new and interesting rollergirls from Hamilton, get lots of pictures and video to chronicle my first away game, and of course, unless the hotel I am at has internet service, I'll be offline until Monday.

The 3rd of 5 ACRD Rollergirl Q & As, Athena Monster, is going live tonight, and then on Monday, we'll reconvene with the final two. I hope you are enjoying these sassy and entertaining Dallas derby queens.

I'm on the hunt for new story ideas, new rollergirls who want to show off and talk about themselves and roller derby, roller derby music, products, and anything else to make this site more interesting. Send any ideas to info at derbyluv.com.

Nightlife Magazine - MTL Roller Derby

Nightlife Magazine - Roller Derby

So Avenue 8, our documentarians (yep may be one of my made up words), got a highlight video of our first jam back on May 5th. It's well done, looks fun, and if you look close a couple of times, you will see a white 74 on a helmet. That's me. Oh, but I shy away from cameras a lot, so I'm not there much! :)

Apocolypse Pow Q&A Interview is up and other stuff

So Apocolypse Pow is the second in the line of 5 of the ACRD (Assassination City Roller Derby) girls that all volunteered to be Derby Luv Rollergirls. Another derby queen on the books, and things are shaping up around here!

In other news, I have spent a few hours mapping my way from Montreal to Hamilton Ontario for the Roll In Rage bout with me and the MTLRD against the Hammer City Roller Girls on Saturday, June 9th. Les Contrabanditas (my team) go up against the Steel Town Tank Girls and the Les Filles du Roi fight it out with the Hamilton Harlots. By all reports Hamilton is tough to beat and a great derby league, so we'll see what comes of it. For more info, visit mtlrollerderby.com.

Tickets are on sale at the MTLRD website for our Championship Bout in Montreal on June 16th.

Thanks to everyone that's been interested in Derby Luv lately, and for all the suggestions, comments and luv sent derby luv's way. Remember, if you want to read about it, I'll write about it!

I'm back and better than ever!

Ok, *shew!*, what a week or two it's been!

You will notice the new layouts and colors on the site. the pages within are slowing being migrated to the new design. I hate to sound like a 1996 webpage, but "please pardon the mess while we are under construction"

In big news, there are new rollergirls for you to get to know. Sour Cherry was interviewed weeks ago, but did you see her yet? Man, she will put fear into the heart of any rollergirl, and make men cry... love it!

And the first of five of the ACRD (Assassination City Roller Derby) players, Trigger Mortis, is live. FINALLY! I hope they all forgive my tardiness. Here's another girl after my derby luv. Next time I travel to Dallas, I think I may be able to go skate with Trigger and friends... I am SO psyched! And she doesn't know yet, but I've hung out at the DoubleWide in Dallas before. I have photos to prove it - very funny place. Check her out!

In Nia Capps news, I am all booked in my hotel for my first ever away game with MTL Roller Derby. A big double header match in Hamilton Ontario on Saturday will put me and my "'ditas" up against the Steel Town Tank Girls, and our league sisters and rivals, Les Filles du Roi against the Hamilton Harlots. Doors open at 3 PM I think - I am confirming where I'll be and I'll let you know!

OH, and a week later, we're playing our championship bout of this mini-first season for MTL Roller Derby, us ditas against the Les Filles, once again. Tickets will be on sale tomorrow from the website.

June 30th, you can see me at the MTL Roller Derby all-stars game as a Cheerleader. That's right - you may remember me from when I was 12 in the burgundy and white uniform from Oakland Elementary's Baseball Cheerleading squad if you were in Asheville, NC in about 1986-87 or so. I was the curvy one that you threw pennies at one Saturday. I threw those back hard, eh? But I kept your quarters mwa ha ha ha

Should be fun.. I'll be crushed when my little drunk squad mates all fall off the pyramid I'll be at the bottom of, but at least I'll have beer hahaha

Ok... later!

Derby Luv hasn't been updated, darn it Nia where the jesus h are you?

We're back online soon!
Just so everyone knows, I didn't mean to lie last week, I do have the interviews of ACRD girls and photos of Sour Cherry and all that... but my day job, a migraine, and sheer "not enough hours in the day" syndrome kicked into all high gear mess this week...

But in other news, thanks to some help from Boneflake Studios, a new and more functional and readable derbyluv.com site will go live tomorrow night I think... or at least soon - and the interviews will be up along with a wrap up of all the upcoming derby events sent my way lately.

Derby luv is also going to add a new and improved links page, as well as possible product reviews, and I am into posting news, events, scores, recruitment notices, interviews, pictorials... videos from you tube, music... anything... so let me know what you want to see!
