Bakersfield Rollergirls beat San Joaquin Valley Vixens!
Trolling around myspace, and with Bakersfield on my mind from my weekly wrap up post below, I noticed a bulletin and checked it out. Seems last night Bakersfield Rollergirls took on the San Joaquin Valley Vixens and won with a final score of 112-56. The press coverage was worth it, with a large crowd and what sounds like some brutal derby... Congrats to the Bakersfield Rollergirls! Labels: bouts

Nia Capps in training...
So I got my new Riedell 125 boots last week and started breaking them in. After a little trepidation about the stoppers, and the no padding, new fit... I got used to them and had a great training week. After getting my bike stolen from outside a Metro station (subway station in the USA) two weeks ago I bought a new one last week. Went for a long ride to test it out. And on Thursday I headed out over Montreal's Jacques-Cartier Bridge to the Gilles-villeneuve track (Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve) and went around the 2.709 mile track 3 times, then biked an hour home through St-Lambert to get back to Longueuil from the island. (That's 8.127 miles, but who's counting? ;) ) Man was I tired on Friday. Other than a spill after doing a slow-motion over correction after losing my rhythm when I was spitting out little damn gnats that were in clouds everywhere in the dusk... it was a blast. I even got to stay in front of my team captain and jammer Georgia W Tush most of the time with the new China reds bearings and Blue Demons wheels that came with my skates from Rollergirl. Asthma? But I play roller derby!
Sorry for anyone emailing me Sunday night and yesterday. I was off to the doctor for what I thought was going to lead to antibiotics for bronchitis coming from a cold I couldn' t shake... But what I got was a diagnosis of severe allergies with the last of the cold I had (no infection, just upper respiratory inflammation) and voila. "Madame, you're wheezing...did you know you have asthma? Are you taking your inhalers?" To which I replied, "I don't have asthma, I just smoke!" hahaha So those weren't panick attacks when I lost my breath at practice and didn't feel nervous, or when I went swimming last week and couldn't keep my breath? I wasn't losing my mind? Thank goodness! But oh no... asthma? I never had asthma... this is new! Well, I guess the past 15 years of smoking, being the co-owner of cats, and living in a city with lots of automobile fumes and smog warnings has done it's work. As I try to quit smoking, I only hope that having this inhaler before I play means higher endurance and better performance... and then at least it won't be so bad. :) In other news, my bicycle was stolen from outside a subway station while I was at derby practice on Sunday, so I'm hunting up a new one that I can just make look like a piece of junk so I don' t have to go through that again - BUMMER. I'll keep you posted. If you see the guy with my Nakamura blue and silver hybrid bike, $300, 3 years old looking like new - tell him to expect a Nia Capps large skate helmet to have to be surgically removed... if you get my meaning. Hell on wheels - Montreal Gazette reports on MTL Roller Derby's first interleague bout in Montreal on May 5th. As the bout began, all hell broke loose. It was mayhem, a melee of rollergirls flying, crashing and tumbling.
Yeah, I can attest to that - my arms and shoulders are still fading the bruises from my opponents' boney shoulders and the helmet head butt I took to the face at the end of the last period left me with a fat abd bruised lip for a few days. I was surprised that I made it through my first bout with no retarded falls for no reason, and I know what I need to work on to be a better player, but when I took out an opposing blocker with a roll as seen here, then caught up to the pack in time to try to block the Les Filles jammer on the far side of the track, I was pleased. And a sold out crowd was an outstanding feat of our league, with only 3 weeks of promotion. Thanks to everyone that came out, and everyone that is currently creating a buzz about Roller Derby in Montreal!
MTL Roller Derby next bout: Triple Threat Battle )Les Contrabanditas vs Les Filles du Roi, vs our Rookies (La Racailles (correct my spelling of this name if you can!) , May 19th, Arena Saint-Louis, 5633 Saint-Domnique, Montreal, QC.

MTLRD bout in 3 days!
Nia Capps, that's me, and the MTLRD are kicking off their condensed mini-season for their inaugural year of roller derby on Saturday May 5th. I was injured with a sprained back muscle for our exhibition bout in February against the Gore Gore Rollergirls of Toronto, Ontario, (Final Score: 'Ditas 91- GGRG 89) so this will be my first full bout. I'll try to make sure I get a photo or two for you. I'm nervous, hoping I don't totally make a fool of myself or let my team down, but I'm excited too. I want to see if all this training, and all my dreaming will translate into some kickass roller derby play or if I'll just lose my temper and wind up ejected from the game. It could happen, ya know. Win or lose, it's better to lose a game of roller derby than not to play at all, so I'm all in! You can still get advance ticket prices up until Friday at $10 each adult, $5 each child 12 and under and $5 for children under 5 by visiting the MTLRD website, or myspace, or if you're in Montreal, find a rollergirl! The doors open at 7, fun starts at 7:30, tickets at the door are $12 each for adults. We'll be at Arena Saint Louis at 5633 Saint-Dominique in Montreal's Mile End/Plateau district. Labels: MTLRD

San Antonio MissyFits Win and their league gets some good press
Thanks to Angela for this submission. There's a roller derby rundown on My San Antonio website, and the roller derby league in San Antonio ( Alamo City Rollergirls) have a great media partner here. You can watch video from the April 15th Missyfits win over the Prim Reapers (a wonderful underdog makes good story) and from the March 18th, Dragon Divas vs Missyfits games - I just had a great break doing that! Congrats, Missyfits! Labels: bouts, media
