Rollergirl Update - Suzie Quadtro of the MTLRD

Derby Round-Up
It's been a crazy week for me after returning from vacation, my day job as a product manager and vendor relationship manager at Pivotal Payments has been busy, and I'm doing some additional training in preparation for the first bout for MTLRD 2007 season next weekend on May 5th. So, I was a little slow in posting all the news coming my way. Here's a round-up for you: The Mad Rollin' Dolls of Madison, WI received some press with The Capital Times. When I checked on what's going on for them, I found that though my season is just kicking off (being in Canada means we have to wait for ice to melt from arenas across our city to play) they are wrapping up their season tonight at the Fast Forward Skate Center. If you're in Wisconsin, you can see this 4 team, veteran league started in 2004, battle it out in their finals. The Examiner did a story on Danielle Rodriguez aka La Taran’tula for the Bay City Bombers. The San Francisco Bay Bombers vs. Brooklyn Red Devils play tonight at the Kezar Pavilion at 8 PM. It's the last home bout of season for The Naptown Roller Girls. On May 12th they go up against the Derby City Rollergirls. With a 2-2 record this season, this is sure to be a hard-playing game. Tickets are available on their website. The San Diego Derby Dolls play tonight as well. Be aware that Linda Vista Road will be closed most of the day for a parade so you'll need an alternate route to get there. It's at Skate World on Linda Vista Road at 8 PM. Special guest, San Diego's PRO MMA Fighter Diego "El Nino" Garijo will be attending the bout. The TXRD Lonestar Rollergirls Hellcats are doing a car wash today to raise money for Ruby Sioux who broker her hand and needs financial help for the surgery to fix it. Help get Ruby back in her wrist guards and derbying it up and swing through for a car wash by derby girls at the Yellow Rose before 3 PM, 6528 N Lamar Blvd and then check out The Holy Rollers vs the PDF at the Convention Center, 500 East Cesar Chavez tonight at 6 PM. Want to check out some roller derby with some testosterone along with your most excellent rollergirls too? The Hotrod Hooligans Men's roller derby team i splaying in the Penn Jersey She Devils League event this Sunday. Hub City Hellrazors take on Western Mass Destruction and the New York Shock Exchange challenge the Dirty Dozen. It's a girl on girl & guy on guy derby action. Kendall Park Roller Rink 3550 State Route 27 Kendall Park, NJ at 6:30 PM on Sunday The Battle Born Derby Demons bring derby to Reno in Nevada, taking on a Utah team (TBA) May 19th. They got some press with The Nevada Appeal. Well, I think there's more, of course, check your own local derby teams to see what you can get to this week and coming soon in your area. If you got a derby game to post, let me know! Labels: bouts

My first 2007 season game
I'm trying to form the words it will take to tell you how nervous, excited, and freaked out I am over being in the first game of this season, but all I really care about is a fantastic show and game for our audience, and a good turn out for my league to match our American derby sisters. If you are in or can be in Montreal Quebec on May 5th, First Blood between Les Contrabanditas and Les Filles du Roi is the place to be! Labels: bouts, MTLRD

Leaving Las Vegas...
So I'm sitting in MCCarran Intl Airport in Las Vegas on a Sunday morning, looking back over my business trip early in the week and the vacation at the end of the week with my family. The best roller derby story I have is of walking between some slot machines and being surprised by a tall blond woman that seemed happy to see me though I didn't know her. Turns out, she had seen my CONTRABANDITAS team shirt and knew from the skates on it it was roller derby.. she saw banditas and asked if I was from Denver (so maybe she knew the Blazin' Banditas... ???" and I explained I was from MTL Roller Derby. She complimented me on the choice of roller derby and went on her way. It was only cool because my step-father then decided I could be a celebrity someday hahaha In the meantime, I won a few times, but only won when I was wearing my derby gear... so new skates are coming my way :) Labels: Travel

More details are coming, but get your contraband, booze, smokes and sombreros for the 'ditas, or your crowns, scepters and robes for the King's girls - and get ready for a battle. I'll post you ticket details when I have them! Labels: bouts, MTLRD

Upcoming Derby Luv interviews - Roller Derby Weekly Wrap up
Just wanted to apologize for my lightness on updates this week. My day job has been INSANE this week in preparation for a trip to Las Vegas next week. Hey, if you're a Sin City Rollergirl and know if I can skate anywhere on the strip or downtown - or if there's a practice I won't need insurance for (I have Canadian Medicare and health insurance though) and you can give me a lift to get there since I don't have a clue where it is, let me know! I'll bring you a MTL Roller Derby shirt :) A new rollergirl interview will be up tonight, Recruitment manager for MTL Roller Derby, Suzie Quadtro was my first volunteer and I've had her interview waiting for a few days now. I think I'll ask her one more question seeing as how MTLRD has closed their recruiting for the time being with a 3rd team forming out of the fresh meat that joined. After that, it's Sour Cherry, founder and current member of the Oil City Derby Girls. And what about non-rollergirls? Well I have a surprise for you - coming real soon - do you know a song called, "Roller Derby Saved My Soul"? Well, of course you do. Uncle Leon and the Alibis are kicking off a derby-event two-week shebang and I'm getting some details on that for you too. Stay tuned my derby-luvvers.. Labels: Derby Luv, news

Inland Empire Derby Divas - Referee injured
Chris, headed to a bar after practice on April 5th with some of the derby girls he referees. I'm sure, like in my league, that it's a normal occurrence, because after a 2-3 hour practice, a beer is awesome. In this case, it turned tragic, as it's reported that a bar fight broke out before they could have finished the first drink. Chris is an EMT so he felt compelled to help and while trying to break up the fighting bar patrons, one of them turned and stabbed Chris in the face with a broken beer bottle. The rollergirls are trying to help Chris, who doesn't have insurance. If you'd like to help you can send donations to: Inland Empire Derby Divas PO Box 452 Riverside, CA 92502 Apologies to any confusion that this blog originally posted as Orange County, it was due to a myspace bulletin post that was sent automatically to my blog, and I was unaware. Thanks for notifying me! Labels: fundraising

Chico Enterprise Record - Police report: Stolen roller derby skates, fake doctor's excuse among reports
Chico Enterprise Record - Police report: Stolen roller derby skates, fake doctor's excuse among reports: "A roller derby skater reported having her skates, pads and other equipment stolen from her vehicle on West Fourth Avenue Wednesday afternoon. A credit card was also taken. " Roller Derby is popping up even in crime reports... I don't know who the skater is, but I feel for her. That sucks! Hey speaking of roller derby popping up, "King of the Hill" on Fox has an episode coming up - "Arlen City Bomber" - where Luann and Peggy are playing roller derby - I saw the preview recently. The roller derby team in this episode is based on The Texas Rollergirls I hear. I might miss it because I have something planned at the same time, but watch for it, I think that's awesome. Have a Happy Easter weekend everyone! Labels: media

Roller derby is neither sporting nor empowering - Pittsburgh Tribune-Review
Roller derby is neither sporting nor empowering - Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: "Roller derby is neither sporting nor empowering" "After writing a column last week about the roller derby revisionist movement, I received several hundred e-mails alerting me to the following facts: I am, at once, gay, overweight, effeminate, lacking moral fiber, old, cynical, a sissy, anti-American, rich, snobbish, black and unable to appreciate "the fastest-growing, grassroots sport in the World!" ... But after a few minutes, all I could see rolling around in the slaw were well-intentioned young women, following a very bad trend for the benefit of a bunch of horny guys.
If that's the definition of sport, I'll take a job as a "referee" at a pillow fight. "...
Mike Seate got a lot of slack on his bashing of roller derby, but he still seems to think that the fact that we might wear fishnets and mini skirts or short shorts, may appear sexy as opposed to sporty, and might do silly things as penalty killers is lame. Oh well, we can't win them all, and we aren't going to have every person love roller derby... and I guess some guys like roller derby cause women are sexy to them, while women and girls love it because it's tough girls kicking ass and taking names and being athletic. I guess Mr. Seate just doesn't get that the costumes and names are done in fun, with whimsical ways to let a woman depart from her normal society-induced girly things into a tough heroine super-hero ass kicker on wheels for the entertainment of those watching the sport. Skater girls hit back - Pittsburgh Tribune-Review
Skater girls hit back - Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: "I wonder if Seate feels the same animosity toward men's sports in which the main goal appears to be beating the snot out of each other? Does he consider boxing a farce? Football? Rugby? The whole spectrum of martial arts? Is seeing women play a full-contact sport so threatening that he must retaliate by writing slanderous columns calling it sordid, violent and stupid? Low blows, but nothing we can't handle. As for Mr. Seate, I suggest he gets over his fear of roller derby fast because it's not disappearing anytime soon. Christine Hennessey (aka Madame Furie) Nacogdoches Rollergirls Nacogdoches, Texas" Hear Hear, Madame Furie! My sentiments echo yours and I am happy to see in the media a retaliation, not just here on my blog. Labels: media, roller derby insulted

MTL Roller Derby needs help
Hey, if you are a friend over on myspace of myself, derbyluv or MTL Roller Derby, you already know the story. We can't find anywhere to hold our season opener this month, or anywhere to play our season. All we need is a flat floor and some kind of bleachers or seating, we can do the rest ourselves, we'll set up and clean up after, we are assuring arena owners in Montreal that our crowds are no worse than hockey fans, our violence no worse than that in hockey, we'll have security, medical, and insurance... but they're not convinced. MTL Roller Derby is pleading, if anyone has or knows of any appropriate bout space in Montreal area, 8500 sq feet and up, please let them know. You can tell me and I can pass it on - this is my league, and I so want to get this show on the road, so to speak! Labels: MTLRD, news

Interview: Chris "Hurt Reynolds" Seale of www.havederbywilltravel.com
So I told you all last week that I heard about this guy that had sold off his possessions to go on the road following roller derby, said I had found a new roller derby hero, and I did it. Chris "Hurt Reynolds" Seale, known for his blog Have Derby Will Travel, agreed to let me interview him. Sorry, Hurt, you didn' t send me a photo so I ripped you off your site - I can change it if you send me a new one.... *raise of an eyebrow to you* Anyhoo, he's entertaining and it's an inspirational story, so if you love roller derby, like I know you do if you're here, check it out!
